88 930 Turbo RUF: Does anyone know this car?

I am looking at this car. I know nothing about RUF. Is this more than I can chew? Is the maintenance cost going to be off the chart? What should I look for? Does anyone know this car's history? Is the asking price reasonable? Thanks for any info/advice you can give me.

Its a nice conversion but not a RUF VIN'd car. Porsche brake calipers are a give away. Nice upgrade bits but I'd just view it as a well modded 930. Get a PPI and possibly check out where the RUF bits were added and get a build sheet on the motor.
If it was a BTR it would be worth a lot more. Its like in 30 years having a 996tt that has a RUF upgraded motor, wheels and interior bits - sure they're quality add ons but it doesn't make it a RUF.

I'm local, we went and looked at it. The price seems up there, if its not an original. Great condition etc, they will probably have to come down some to sell it though?

Assuming that it is not an original what would be a fair price for it? 40k? Btw does the car look like it is in the video and picture? Does the dealer look legit and have the expertise in restoring classic cars like they claim or are they just routine used car salesmen.

No idea, the dealer acknowledges the ruf package was done after import into the US. There is actually a 10 minute of the car on youtube, from the dealer.
I think they have a decent rep? I know someone who bought a car from them and was pretty happy with it. There prices seem to be pretty high though, pre-recession values.

I also seen the car on the web.......and got pretty excited.....I didn't think the price was bad for a 650hp car w/ realitve low miles. I had called RUF before about another car that was converted, to see if they could verify it. Unless it has a RUF serial # they cannot verify the conversion without the car going to their facility. Appartently without a RUF serial# the cars are not worth as much. I thought the front facia was wrong.....but I dont know much about RUF BTR's. If you buy the car let me know if i missed a steal.....I had to take that web site off my favorite list....so I could think about the car I own now!....LOL!

The engine in that car is worth an easy $35K-40K if it has forged pistons and rods (which I am sure it does). While I personally do not like the yellow accents (interior and poweder coating on the engine). I believe the 600+ hp claim.
That video is stunning, the presenter owner seems to be very cool and straight shooter no B.S no crap.
That intercooler alone is worth a solid $2500-$3000 if not more.
So $49K is VERY fair..try building it, you will be looking at $100K....easy!

Gabe is right that it is not a Ruf VIN car because there were no Ruf vin BTRs in the U.S. as they would not pass smog. The Ruf BTR conversion for the U.S. was as mild as Group B Cams, K27 turbo, 3.4 Pistons and Cylinders with Ruf exhaust or as wild as the full suspension, matter cage, Ruf intercooler, wheel package, gauges, front bumper or valance, rear apron, seats, steering wheel etc.
Based on the photos of the car in question I will say that it is a Ruf "STYLED" conversion, everything appears to be well done and I am certain it is when looking at the fabrication but there aren't many Ruf parts to be found there. The dual fuel rails are commonly found on e-bay and not the Carrera ones found on Yellow Bird, the intercooler appears to be a spearco core ruling out Ruf I/C. This car does appear to be a good value, FYI I have the full suite of Ruf stickers on my car. Yasin is right about the cost to build such an engine but I dare say it is not at least anymore (just like mine I suppose) a Ruf.

BTW I think they are missing a big piece of the puzzle, this car was either an NA engine converted to Turbo or it is running a standalone EFI package either way great price. Buyer beware the valve stems need to be changed or you will damage the wheel at high speeds when the stems flop around, you need to have the sunken high speed metal stems from Ruf. The maintenance if the car is sorted will be comparable to that of a standard turbo since most of the parts on the car will be newer and better, FWIW RUf in Dallas has no clue about mid year cars and the conversions were largely done by Porsche specialist /resellers independents who had relationships with Ruf in Pfaffenhausen.

That car look familiar. I think someone else here was looking at it as I recognize the video. I'm not a fan of the yellow accents, but the rest of the car looks nice.

Lincoln, you forgot about Frank Beddor's car....that was a Ruf vin BTR brought in in '86....still here. I know of 2 others brought into US back in the day...Black that's a slant nose delete now living in Fla...not that pretty and a Red one w/tan interior...owner known, but I won't post his name. All Ruf vin cars.

Fat Cab, did you see the car in person and did you talk to the salesman face to face?
Also, does anyone know a reputable Porsche shop for PPI in the Rockville, MD area?
Thanks again.
