O.K. I will take the tail of the tiger. LOL

911rudy, that is the most funny description of what it like to own and drive a 930. Love it.

I have a friend who used to own a 87 Carrera and when he drove my 930, he immediately sold his Carrera and bought a 965 turbo. Turbo will give you the thrill that can only be experienced. Go out and test drive one to know what everybody have been talking about.

Turbo. Hands down. One of the best overall experiences you'll ever have in an auto. I still get excited when I drive mine. And when you hear that turbo start to spool up! Wow!

+1 on the turbo-look (that's what I have). There is nothing like the look of a wide-body 911 from the '80's, and no excessive maintenance.

911rudy hit the nail on the head - the naturally aspirated 911's are the respectable brunettes you take home to meet your parents, the 930 is the red-headed wild **** that tries to kill you every time you "get it on"...two cars for two types of people - just decide which you are and can live with.

The 930 obviously offers a higher level of performance. But if the original poster has to stick with a budget of $25K and he has to/wants to keep service expences reasonable, he isn't going to have much fun if he ends up having to replace a turbo early in his ownership. If $ is no object the turbo is a great choice. But if budgets matter the 930 may not be the best choice for the original poster.

Best regards,
Dino

930 with out a doubt! I have had a few 911's over the years. I've been driving my 86 930 as a DD for four years now. She runs out great and the cost of up keep is right in line with all the others. right now prices are way down. you can find a great 930 at a good price, just go look. Driving it home is half the fun. I picked up mine in TX and drove it back to seattle.

Default another simple pleasure of the turbo cars

Mine has a B&B muffler on it and when I had it off one day I decided to take section of pipe and a big hammer and I smacked out the 2 V shaped baffles you can see inside through the 3" inlet and outlet pipes.
Now I have the new pleasure of hearing the wonderful sounding faint whistle of the turbo's exhaust turbine at around town driving speeds.

The regular exhaust note didn't get much louder because the B&B mufflers have a 1" layer of fiberglass, scotchbrite pad material, or steel wool around the inside diameter of the muffler held in place by heavy mesh steel screen like material. So that stuff and the one long seperator baffle in the muffler is still quieting it down alot still.. but I can hear the turbo whistle now and I love it.

Another benefit of removing the 2 V shaped baffles from inside the muffler was less backpressure. I have the mechanical NHS/VDO boost gauge with telltale where the clock was and after removing the 2 baffles and doing nothing else my full throttle boost went up .5 bar

Just another vote for the turbo over the carrera... the faint turbo whistle while driving slowly is sweet!
When going faster the whistle is probably too high a pitch to hear and the rest of the noise drowns it out.

Funny reading this thread, my '89 is a 32. Carrera modified to a turbo but kept the narrow body. The maintainence seems inexpensive considering the HP and bang for the buck performance.

I also have a '77 S which is downright cheap to insure and maintain and it's a hoot to drive as well, just not quite as much of a hoot....;-)

i'll say this, don't test drive a 930 if you think you may just want a Carrera. It will ruin you. I DD'd my '79 930 for over a year, loved every mile. with nothing more than a gutted stock muffler and .9 bar she was a beast. would light the tires up from a slow 1st gear roll and just keep pulling till you either ran out of ball sack or road.

my vote is: every man should drive a 930 atleast once in his life

Driving a 911 is like kissing your sister after driving a 930!

If you're just cruising to work and back most of the week, and not on boost very much, the engine's compression is only 7:1. It's not working very hard at all when you're just cruising around. So as far as "parts wearing out faster due to heat from the turbo", that really depends on how you drive it.

I think there is a stigmatism attached to "turbo cars". I've owned lots of them, some factory some aftermarket. Non ever gave me "turbo related" problems that i didn't inflict on myself. A well thought out aftermarket system will give you years of trouble free service, and one developed by the factory should work even better long term.

For the guys that have rebuilt their 930 motors I would like to know what percentage did it for higher performance more so than necessity.

I like the 930 and was thinking about it, but the performance to a later 964 is no different. True i don't have to wait for the turo to spool to feel the power, but same with an engine tha will last a lot longer due to lower heat and punishment.

I chose the 5 speed over a notchy 4 speed. And yes I do like the look of the 930, but chose a 964.
