This subject has been discussed before....do a search here and on 6 speed and Pelican...I don't specifically recall what they sold for but it was around $4K, possibly higher depending upon the mileage on it.

big difference in a 76-77 vs 78-88 trans because the early trans is a short bellhousing and worth more. Same as the 934 and right side up 935 trans minus the internal oil pump

also if the trans has a Ltd or no Ltd....

If it is not rebuilt I think you are more in the 3K range. I don't think you are going to find anyone willing to pay 4k for a tranny that is a take-off from another car. Just too much risk that they are looking at installing a used tranny for 4k + labor and then facing the possibility of a 2k rebuild in the near future.

Why would a short bell housing make it more expensive? If you own a 78-88 930 wouldn't you want one with the longer nose? Just asking

I haven't noticed a price difference between the older style and the newer one, personally.

There is a difference in price between older and later 930 trannys.

The later standard bell trans was in production and used from 78-88

Early short bellhousing trannys were only available in US cars for 2yrs 76-77

Not as many of those cars/parts around. In the early years, anybody who want to put a fact Turbo motor in a mid year, SC, or Carrera, usually went with a short bell trans as it would bolt in. The later trans and of course a G-50 required mods to the trans etc.. In essence they are just harder to find and thus usually command more.

As far as pricing, I've noticed a rediculous and unexplained run-up in cost over the last few on both early and late. I think some of the recent asking prices for both used and rebuilt are just nuts. Used is a pig-in-a poke, and I think rebuilt has been marketed as if it's some black art. Beyond the price of the parts & pulling the motor being a PIA, there is not a whole lot to one of these transes that a good home mechanic or a trans guy couldn't handle. I think it's jus the P-car tax at play.

fwiw, the reason for the longer bell housing in the later year cars was because they were putting in these thick rubber center clutch discs and the rubber part was around 2" thick and took up alot more room.

Unfortunately it was a mistake because the rubber center clutch discs eventually come apart and nobody wants to use them anymore. Especially not on cars that are making more torque than stock.
Everyone with some knowledge of that puts in a more durable spring center clutch disc instead.

you may want to go over on pelican and see what they were going for and others buy them for some kit type cars because they're so bullet proof. I sold mine (rebuilt myself with short gear set: 1-4, and well used quaiffe) for ~$5k.

Yeah but you must have paid $600 dollars per gear x 4, so it really isn't comparable. I know that is about the number, 5.5K.... that I have been seeing for rebuilt units WITH a GT LSD installed. Take away the gears or LSD upgrades and your're right at the 3k mark for a used tranny that hasn't been freshened up..

I know this is a very old thread but the answer to your question is two fold. There are less 76-77 short bell housing turbo 4 speeds around and because the 76-77 box is 1 1/2 inches shorter it moves your engine 1 1/2 inches forward. Not exactly mid engine but every little bit helps

The short bell housing 930 is more valuable because it's a lot easier to install it into an early car without significant chassis modifications.

FWIW - On the short bell housing gearbox you can also run the 935/962 light weight clutch/pressure plate without needing the adapter that spaces the ring gear out as well as the extended throw out bearing....
