Default '89 5-speed fit '78?

Wondering if a 5 speed from an '89 will bolt w/o mods in a '78. I did a search and didn't see this topic, only reference to using a Patrick modde'd G50/50 box.

Thanks....

Unless you want to mess with the torsion tube, you need the G50 with the shortened bell housing ala Patrick Racing.

That's what I thought unless you use a Ruf 5-speed and they are a bit funky...

Actually you can do away with the rear torsion bar all together and go with coil-overs. My car has the bar removed and the coilovers allow plenty of room to put in a longer wider tranny. They run about $800 apiece and then you are done. Be careful of putting too much into a car that might not fetch that much on resale. One more gear for most of us is not worth that kind of money. I feel that if we could get a higher first gear then our four speeds would be fine. I know that the low first overcomes our lack of low end torque but if we could get more leg out of first then we are in the high boost zone for second. Maybe some one has tried some different combos and will tell us the outcome.

What rudy said.

Mine has the cut torsion and G50/50 (shortened gearing) and I'm loving life. 5 is better than 4, and coil overs (like your 964) also don't suck.

Is this your 78' already, or just thinking?

A buddy of mine asked me the question and I told him guys w/5-speeds seem to find it wakes up the car a bit....actually its a '79, but figure that doesn't make a difference.

My car has a shortened G50/01 installed, no cutting of the car necessary. I think the G50/01 was fitted to the '87 on 3.2 carreras.

Remember a G50/50 is stronger, but they fetch more money. The G50/0# seems to be good for 700bhp...

It is a minor modification. Does someone have a pic of the modification (small cutout and reweld)?

Regards,

Do you mean the tranny or the car?

Nathan yours is the tranny. Yes show the work being done if you can. A G50 is understated strength, smoothness, reliability.

I don't have any pics but this is how they do it:

Tranny has to be disassembled.
The input shaft has to be welded and built up behind the splines that go in the clutch plate as the shafy has a smaller diameter behind the splines. The shaft is then cut (shortened) and machined so it is like it was before, except shorter.
The tranny casing also then gets shortened around the bellhousing.
The early spring centered clutch disc is then used instead of the rubber centered one, this is how the tranny can be shortened.

One day I'll measure my bellhousing.
