Prospective Turbo Buyer Needs Some Help
I have owned a '88 non-turbo Cab for the past three years and have put about 20k miles on it as my daily dirver. I have enjoyed it immensely. I am now looking to sell it and upgrade to an 89 Turbo coupe.
Can you guys point out the significant ownership differences between the turbo and non-turbo aside from the performance? Specifically, what are the turbo problem areas and what turbo-specific stuff should I ensure I get looked at on the PPI? Is there an appreciable difference in preventive maintenance costs?
I'm looking at a nice white turbo coupe with about 30k miles going for $55k. Barring no significant issues on the PPI is that in the ballpark?
Thanks,
Geno

Cliff Notes......you're going to go thru tires, pads and rotors much more frequently.
But that is a lot of $$$........you can buy a smokin 965 for that amount or less. A Rennlister just sold his 1991 965 with 26K miles for $48K. The 965 is a much better car........and I am not knocking the 930 when I say that.

they are both great cars but i think the 930 is a special beast that you will hold as a keeper. just not much to replace them with unless you have the coin to acquire a real cobra! the 930 is a true step up from your 3.2 and will leave you weak kneed and in the mood to light up a cigarette!
regarding price, while there will be some that tell you that you can find a cheaper car...at 55k and in proper condition, you won't feel like you paid too much! good luck.

Your subject car is priced at a premium for two reasons:
I am not sure I would pay the premium for the 5 speed '89 (vs the pre-'89 4 speeds). There are lots of opinions about 4 vs 5 speed transmissions but in the end it's just not that important.
If you are planning on putting `6,500 miles per year on your "new" car, I am not sure I would pay the low mileage premium associated with a 30k '89 either.
I am also not sure I would buy a 930 for a daily driver unless the commute is mostly highway. These cars don't like to be "fenced in". Heat buildup in warmer climates can be a problem for you in stop and go traffic.
Having said all of that .... buy the BEST specimen you can find (and afford). What you save by buying a 'tired' specimen will be spent in spades trying to sort out after the purchase.
- '89s have the 5 speed transmission
- 30k is pretty low mileage for a 20 year old car

The comment above about the "Low Milage" premium is a valid one. If you are paying top dollar for low miles and then use it as a daily driver you are virtually losing money on every mile driven. My advice would be to find a late model 930 that has just had a 60-80k make over where all of the work can be verified and you will be way ahead of the 20 year old car with no upgrades or in my opinion, not enough driving to keep it fit. It is amazing how well most 930 owners keep there cars properly tuned and outfitted. Milage is not an enemy if the car has been taken care of.

I will sell you my perfect '89 930 for $45K if you are interested. I think it is the nicest one out there. It has been tastefully modified and upgraded and babied only by myself.
It has 59K on it.

Good point about the mileage...I do not plan on making it a daily driver...will be a weekend driver
Yasin, would be interested in seeing what your car looks like in detail and history of mods...I am really looking for as close to stock as possible but am willing to look...

Here are the mods:
Of course the custom made 17" HRE Wheels with Yokohama Rubber, 99% tread left. 10.5" rears and 8.5" fronts
The intercooler, designed by me, its a one off, all powder coated or polished including a brand new alternator...:
K27-7200 Turbo (bought brand new), B&B headers (bought brand new and then ceramic coated) and B&B muffler (bought brand new) with 1 bar TiAL Wastegate (brand new as well), all rubber lines replaced with Earls lines and Ealrs fittings including the oil lines:
Lightweight Odyssey Battery and Mounts:
The front brakes are off a 1997 Twin Turbo, new rotors and new pads (stock new rotors and pads in the rear):
Interior, pretty nasty huh?:
You are looking at $15K in mods.

Thanks for the compliments Pete! I believe I have one of the nicest ones out there took me almost 2years of searching before I found the right '89 car, I hate to admit how much (time and money) I spent on airfares flying around the country looking at cars, which were supposed to be perfect but in fact were leaky good 5foot cars...this one I bought was the creme de la creme owned by a doctor in San Diego.
Pavegeno928 what is your email address that I can send the pictures to?

Three Wheelin'
Pavegeno928,
WOW, Those are the mods I would have done if I have an extra $ 15,000. I also replaced my intercooler and exhaust. If Yasin does not have the original parts he pulled, you can easily find them on most any Porsche site or even ebay. You will never put them back on the car, you will be much more happier Yasin went through the time and energy to mod the car and they just take up room in the attic.
Beautiful car, Yasin.
