Fried ignition unit
 

Hi all......
I'd like to ask some advice if i may.

Long story short........ i ended up on the roadside with a pooped coil and ignition unit on my `86' 930. This hadn't been entirely unexpected, as i have had a couple of hot start problems recently, and a couple of times when the engine just died momentarily
Fortunately things could have been worse, and i almost managed to coast into an empty parking bay.
Unfortunately, i had quite an audience, as it was outside of a local "superstore", and i think they quite enjoyed watching me push the car the final couple of metres up to the kerb. (sweating like a dog i might add).

Right, my question is regarding the correct replacement coil.
I ordered a permatune unit as well as the new coil.
The parts arrived no problems, but the coil is a fatter unit, and has no bracket.
The bosch part no. is 0221 118 322, which i think equates to Porsche part 944 602 115 00.
Will this coil be ok for purpose, or should i send it back and get them to send the correct coil for an 86 930?.

If you're going to have to go thru the process of making a bracket and all...why don't you just order the coil that fits in the existing bracket? That presupposes that you are willing to wait for the new one and dont' need to get back on the road ASAP....but if you're willing to wait, I'd go for the correct replacement.

I thought you had to use a proper permatune coil with their permatune cdi box?

That's what I thought...strange that they'd send a coil that was a different size for a specific application by vehicle year and model.

Seems I got it wrong. According to Pelican Parts you do need a Bosch Coil although they also sell a Permatune Coil which must only be used with the Permatune. http://www.pelicanparts.com/catalog/...ELignt_pg5.htm

It would seem the coil you have is for the 3.2 carrera, not a 930. http://www.pelicanparts.com/catalog/...ELignt_pg9.htm

The 930 is more expensive too hehe.

My '87 did the same thing around a month ago. It already had a Permatune in it from the previous owner.
You can use the origonal bosch or the Permatune coil which cost more than the bosch one.

The correct bosch coil for an '87 is 0 221 121 001 and it is clear aluminum anodized with a brown plastic tower. It comes with the gold cad plated bracket already attached to it and they have a habit of overtightenening the screw in the bracket and squishing the coil a bit at the factory in Brazil.

My car broke down at a traffic light in front of a very popular intracoastal waterfront restaurant and bar during happy hour. There was even a free buffet if you bought 2 drinks... no problem.
I called a buddy and he came and towed me with a rope back home after I had eaten and drank a couple Bass Ales.

When I ordered a new Bosch coil from Sal @ Vertex in Miami, he said "see... your car thinking about you and just wanted you to go in have some beers, meet some chicks and have a good time...

Only a 930 would do that.
