Valuation for old ruf BTR

Valuation for old ruf BTR
Hi all, I'm here from the "other" Porsche forum where I'm known as Jim2. I currently own a 79 930 turbo, and now I'm looking at buying an old RUF BTR.
After searching and reading pages of posts on Rennlist there appears to be a number of members with some background of the various ruf cars, hence my hopes of getting a little advice.
I thought I had established a value for the ruf, but now I'm questioning myself after a friend advised me of a 993 twin turbo advertised on pelican in the low $40s.
The ruf btr (BTRIII) is a 1992 conversion done to a 79 sc chassis. It's the wide body style replicating a 1991 930. All components including interior, suspension, brakes, engine, gearbox, chassis have been converted. (Essentially it resembles a well built up 89 platform 930 with the body of a 1991, and an engine rated at 405 hp) The body is 6/10 due to some minor damage, otherwise it would be about 9/10. Interior is probably 7/10, and mechanical appears to be 8/10 or perhaps better. 40,000 miles since conversion. Most of what I see on the car is normal wear and tear. The car has supporting paperwork and invoices from ruf. Again, it's a conversion, not a ruf serial numbered car.
I pegged the value in the low $30s as is, or high $30s if the car were perfect. Is this appropriate, or should it be less given that I can now buy a 993 twin turbo for $43k. (LOTS of car for $43k !)

Sounds like a real bastard, if I understood you correctly it is a 79SC made to look like a 965 since the 930 production ceased in 89. I would pay anything near $30K for that car.

Hi Schnele, thanks for the reply. This conversion is an authenitc RUF BTR III wide body.
The RUF invoice for the conversion (German marks to USD) equates to about $70,000 back in 1992. Within the documents are letters from RUF discussing the conversion as BTR. If a customer brought RUF a 930 perhaps the conversion cost was a little lower, but in this case the customer started with an SC.
The RUF invoice was entirely german so I brought someone with me who could translate. There was probably a little over 100 line items on the invoice, and each item could be accounted for on the car.
A basic overview:
1979sc donor chassis
rear torsion tube converted to 89 930
G50/50 box and hydraulic pedal assembly
930 trailing arms with late model spring plates
Ruf four piston calipers front and rear
Large two peice rotors and custom hats on all corners. Estimate 13" dia x1.25"
Large sway bars both front and rear. Appear stock in layout but bar diameter is large
Large front center mounted oil cooler
Larger than stock torsion bars front and rear
Engine is 3.4 liter displacement with Bosch EFI, invoice rates it at 405hp
930 style intake manifold with two EFI injectors per cylinder on custom injector blocks. RUF fuel rails.
RUF intercooler (similar location to 930, not CTR version)
RUF twin outlet exhaust
930 size flares
1991 + bumper skins, rockers, mirrors, and door handles
964 tail lights
Drip rails removed
Ruf five spoke wheels
H4s
New interior upon conversion
RUF seats
matter 6 pt. cage with leather padding to match interior
all ruf instruments with 350km speedo (220 mph), and ruf boost gauge
All supporting documents with car.
Ladder damage to roof, left rocker, repaint on front bumper is not the best
Needs windshield, H4 lense,
65K kms (40K miles) on odometer
Wear matches mileage
Does this cover it better?
So, give me your thoughts.

Well then it sound like you have a winner, still there are some inherent chassis benefits of the turbo over the SC, but from your very thorough description the car sounds pretty good and if it runs well and is south of $40K buy it. I would add that the items like the Matter bar etc. are lo longer available and adds a small premium to the price.

don't want to rain on the parade but...... if this car is so heavily modded and some things aren't available anymore, i'd go for the 993tt. If its power you are after, its the winner, if it's later tech, its the winner. Don't know your motivation though??

biglicks, I'm into old school turbos and I have no apprehension about any modification or component used on this car. What bothers me is seeing the price of later model turbo's dropping within range of the dynosaur I'm prospectively out to purchase. It makes me feel as though my original evaluation is too high. Also, I don't regularly follow 930 sales values and throw into this mix the RUF background in this case.
Daly88930, I have to agree with you, the documentation is what's going to support the value. Thanks for backing my own thoughts on this.
YYC930 I'm the person who did the recent deal with you on the race cams. Thanks for your input! Have you seen any comparables in your travels?

But the diference is it's a 996. Seriously, the 996s are far from bottoming out, so while it's performance your looking for, maybe [minor] investment value is a factor -- winner a $40k 993TT. That is a really good price if the condition is good. I watch them go for $60+ on ebay all day long. It's a hobby of mine. My wife says I need PA (Porsche Anonymous).

One thing I have noticed after owning my 930 are comments from guys with later model Turbos who have owned 930s sometime in their past----they always miss the original, and they always tell me the 930s were just more fun to drive. It`s not that the newer models are not competent but .....

Jimzturbo: When are you going to post a pic of this beast...
Also, 993TTs down in the $40K range? What kind of condition and miles? I still see them in the $50k range and above... I really like these cars although they don't provide the primal feel of the 930, and I hate OBDll.
