Default Question RE: Dyno Runs & Tuning

Guys,

I am having GHL headers installed this week & my car is going to undergo a full service...next weekend I am taking the car to the dyno.

I need tips on how to tune my car & make sure that everything is running properly.

This will be my first time putting the 930 on the rollers. I am curious to see what kind of numbers she will make with my mods...

Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

Yup, it's important to tie down well.

Avoid heat soak as much as possible. The procedure I use with 930's is to inspect the engine and check the base timing. I then load on the dyno immediately after driving around the block at low load. Turn off engine and turn on the big dyno fan blowing on the open engine compartment. Install the tie downs and sensor pick-ups. Turn on engine, make sure rpm signals, MAP, O2 and intake temps are in line while spinning the rollers to check for vibration/tie down integrity. If a go, make a pull while carefully watching O2 and boost level while listening to the engine. If the first two pulls are consistent you've got your baseline for making further changes. This whole process from the moment you drive on the dyno to the finish of the second pull can be done in 5-10 minutes. If your going to do more tuning, then I would suggest a dedicated fan for the oil cooler and a couple carpet dryer type fans (3000cfm) directed at each side of the bottom of the engine to help evacuate that area as would happen on the road(though certainly not as effectively).

I understand that I have to tie the car down. Perhaps I should have been more clear, but I am not that elementary!!!!

Any advice on tuning???

Don't forget your 3mm allen wrench (or is 4mm?) and make sure it fits. Make small adjustments. Clockwise is rich. CC is lean.

BTW, I use a bag of ice to cool the intercooler down between runs. You would be surprised how hot it can get even with fans running.

Sorry Cajun, I didn't mean to be harsh about tying down. It's just that I've seen quite a few dyno operators take this for granted. On our cars, the boost can hit hard, and things can go bad quickly.
Now on to tuning. Tuning is really going to depend on the results of the dyno pull. I'm afraid I've been away from the board for a while so I'm not up to speed on your car. If your CIS, your going to be fairly limited to adjusting mixture and maybe timing(though I'd be careful here). If you have an adjustable boost control, then you may have some room to play there. I'd be fairly careful/conservative if your dyno guy isn't familiar with 930 and doesn't use det cans(to listen for knock), otherwise they won't know what changes can be made safely.

SoCal Mike,

I am still CIS, and a pending marriage has pushed EFI back about 1 year!!!

My car has the following upgrades: K27 7006, 1 bar spring, B&B Intercooler, aftermarket air intake w/ K&N, Andial Fuel Enrichment (although it is disconnected & will soon be pulled off the car...won't be operating during the tests), GHL headers, B&B muffler. I am hoping for 350+rwhp, and would be jumping for joy with 375rwhp.

I think you'll be at about 325-350 rwhp. I had a similar setup before my rebuild.

Hi Cajun. Sorry about the "tie down" quote above. I was just being a wise ***. My car is scheduled for the dyno tomorrow. I have an '87 with CIS. I have the same mods as you, but with K27 7200. I'll post up the results ASAP.

No worries man! I figured you were just giving me a hard time!!!

Please do post up your numbers. It looks like my car will be down a couple more days. I found out that the reason she is leaking oil is not bad oil return lines, but a bad oil sending unit. The headers are going on the car as we speak, and the new sending unit will be in tomorrow.

Good luck with your dyno session tomorrow!
