Default Removing Header Nuts/Bolts

How do you guys get to the allen bolts to remove the headers. I see removing the nuts are not a big deal but the heater box block the allen bolts. So what's the trick in getting them out?

I preferred a nut splitter. Leaves the studs in perfect condition.

I tryed many ways, the game was me against the header bolts.
The result was 12:0 for me, but it was a lot of carefull work.

Heat: not really impressing
Spray: For few days I sprayed them every evening, maybe that helped a little
Nutsplitter: srew broke on 2nd bolt, I needed to dremel the whole nutsplitter from the bolt.

So I went every evening in my garage and tryed careful to get them of.
Few with dremel :-)

have fun!

Heat the nut till it just turns red hot and they come right off.
Usually with a little squeak as they break loose from the stud.

My nuts looked like they would never come off!!...best way is to heat nut red then cool straight away with cold water from a spray bottle, repeat heat then loosen when red hot,,if still not moving repeat again then loosen when
hot,,,my well corroded nuts came off pretty easy with this method!

My drivers side nuts came loose. I didn't have the long 8 mm allen to try to get the bolts yet. I did try to loosen the passenger side but they were to tight so I sprayed WD-40 again last night and will try tomorrow.

If you guys are trying to remove stubborn nuts, I HIGHLY recommend a product called Kroil, by Kano Laboratories. It is a product similar to PB blaster rust penetrant, but makes that stuff look like water. I have removed some really rusted stuff that probably shouldn't have come loose with this stuff.

Where can you pick up a can? I am planning to tackle my header change this weekend, hopefully.

Thanks,

I can't get the right side to come loose. I don't want to break the stud. What are you guys using to heat them up with? I used a small propane type torch with no luck.

Thanks Chuck...I googled as well with the same results, however, I was hoping it would be more readily available at Napa, checkers, autozone, etc...

Propane do work but it takes a lot of time to get the bolt hot enough.
It has to be glowing red hot, with the propane burner I have it takes me 15 minutes or so to get a bolt hot enough.
Nowdays I use my gas welding equipment, takes a few seconds and I am done.

When I removed my headers I broke two heads, just welded nuts on them and turned them lose.

It makes one envious of you folks who have a welder and good torch available to take car of broken studs like that. For the usual weekend garage guy, hearing that "snap" is a much dreaded sound....and usually means many hours of unintended and unplanned for labor...PLUS the exercise of a limited vocabulary.

Your right propane will not get it hot enough. I've been told to get Mapp gas that should do it. I will give it one one try tomorrow and see how it goes.
