My "new" '86 930

Very cool car, it looks a lot like my '85 eurospec. Make sure the corner weights, ride height, and alignment are proper before you start trying to change things on the car. Setting it to the euro ride heights make changes in the camber and toe which in my humble opinion really help the car's handling. Congrats and I hope you have many happy and safe miles in it.

drop it down...to euro specs, go with a long neck intercooler, get some h4 headlights, you be amazed by the difference, and have fun. like everyone says, you can do ALOT more, but shes a beauty. enjoy her for now. welcome to the sickness.

I took a buddy out in her last night for a highway spin. We got into the boost pretty often, but I never got it close to redline but...
when I parked the car in the garage I let it idle for a couple of minutes for cooldown, and the exhaust started making an intermittent "pop" sound. It was'nt loud, but it would pop every 3-5 seconds. I turned the car off and restarted it- same thing.
This morning I started the car cold (obviously) and the popping did'nt recur, but the car was very hesitant to rev and was running rough.
I'm wondering if I should drive it 10 miles to my local tech, or have it towed. Crap.

My car did that...but it was a while ago (I drove it 25-30 miles to my mechanic- just took it easy) and I can't remember just now what the problem was...I don't recall that it was a "big deal" though.
that aside, that's a sweet ride! congratulations!

You could just fit RSR coil over shocks at the rear (or all over) to help your exsisting torsion bar suspsension. It will then be easy to change the spring rates and adjust ride height and damping.
My goal w/ the new setup is to lower the car, reduce squat as much as possible w/o making the tail any more skittish (or at least reducing it as much as possible) and eliminating as much roll as possible.

I didn't answer your question as I hoped someone more knowledgable would.
I think most upgrade to the hollow Torsion bars (sanders) and new dampers.
If you didnt want to lower the car then I think the coil overs would be perfect. But as you need to remove the rear torsion bars to lower the car at the rear maybe you should just replace them with uprated hollow ones. Possibly change dampers too.
Also as you are going to lower the car you will need a 4 wheel alignment including camber & castor. So really you should also have it corner balanced too.
I don't think it's a good idea to remove the torsion bars and rely on coil overs only without having the car welded/strengthened in the rear. I believe the front would not need uprating for coil overs.
Hopefully Stephen or Geoffrey will help us out here with their great advice.
