Default carrera 3.2 crank same as 930?

Is it true that the post 1984 carrera 3.2 has the same crank as the 1978 and on 3.3 turbo? They don't have the same number, so what is the difference, if any?

Thanks

Pete

The difference is in the dist gear. Yes, they can be changed and used in a turbo.

100000 Thanks. There's a lot of bull****ters around who seem to know nothing! I asked two so called Porsche experts in France, they both say that the cranks are different. Obviously one has a Turbo crank he desperately wants to sell for much too much money. But still he's in the business and should know. But then you read in books written by american writers and they all say the Cranks are the same, even porsche states the same dimensions in their manuals. I know that about the gear, but it is a part of its own, not really the crank itself.

Why do the two cranks have different numbers if they are the same? are they sold with the gear fitted maybe?

Hi Pete,

The reason for the two part #'s are the crank gear as mentioned...and secondly the type of pilot bearing used....

The early 930 cranks used a pilot bearing that pressed into the flywheel...when the 3.2 engine came out they switched to a pilot bearing that attached to the crank by three small screws.....so the crank was machined and tapped to accept this new bearing...

The 3.2 and 3.3 crank can be swaped so check on which type bearing you will need to use and make sure it will work for you...

Thanks, Mine has the pilot bearing in the flywheel, engine is number 226 made since the beginning of 3.3 930. My first thought is since the pilot bearing is in the flywheel i can just put my old flywheel on the 3.2 crankshaft, right? They have the same 9 bolt pattern too. Other way round would be more tricky since you would have to drill holes for the bearing in the old type crank. Or would the screw plate need a flywheel with a bigger hole in it?

Hi There,

You are all set....no changes needed...if you were going to put the 3.3 crank in the 3.2 it would be a problem...

So, have fun!!!

Hi Pete,
Here in the States the prices are almost always the same for the 3.2/3.3 cranks....

Keep Looking...

Just a question on these 2 Cranks. Is the Heat Treat the same, and to the same depth. I know on the later bigger stroke Cranks the Heat Treat is different. It could be different by production, vendor etc. I thought the Cranks were all made by the same vendor, but the hardness is different and to a deeper depth on the Turbo Cranks. I'm wondering if this is the same on the 3.2 and 3.3 Cranks? What I understand is that when the factory plugs are drilled out and the cranks are tapped for removable set screws, the Turbo Cranks are much harder at the top.

Rick - you have 720 RWHP at 15 psi?? Can you post a dyno sheet?
Is this an 12 valve engine that redlines around 7000?
I am surprised you haven't made international motorsport news, man.

Do I detect a bit of disbelief???

710...not 720....

Yes, it's 3.8L 2 valve....7200rpm....

I'd tell ya right to your face, my man. Show me the money...
Or bring it to Lime Rock on April 3rd with the chart. I'll be there.

7200, 12 valve at 15 psi, 3.8 710 REAR WHEEL HORSE POWER.

Hey, wait a minute - you changed the boost in your sig.Now its 1.15 - now we are getting closer.

Bring that thing up to Lime Rock - open test on April 3 - See if you can post within a couple seconds of my driver in my SCCA ITS 150 HP wonder (you gotta let me put the gas in your car).

I'll be the 240 pound short guy lookin for a dyno sheet.
