Oil thermostat question (again...)
OK. Here's a picture of the thermostat (not mine, but it shows what I need).
As can be seen, the two upper lines are hot. The lower rear line is hot. The lower front line is cold.
It seems that the oil T-stat opens, sends oil to the front coolers, but that it is stopped on the way back.
Does the T-stat have a bypass valve to let oil recirculate? That would explain why the two upper lines are hot.
Can I partly remove some (or all) of the inside of the T-stat to test the flow?
Just cruising today in 50F temps, it got to 210F. Much higher that it used.
Thanks,
Jim

Jim:
Indeed, that assembly is more than a simple thermostat, it IS a pressure relief valve, as well.
I'd venture that the element inside is not opening all the way to allow full flow to the front cooler. This situation is not that uncommon over time and you can either replace the innards of the housing or buy a whole new one.
The real trick is getting it apart without destroying the threads and sometimes its better to replace the thing.....

Thanks Steve.
Can I pull the piston out to test my theory before plunking down the cash for a new one? Or will I take a chance on blowing the coolers with cold oil?
Either way, it looks like a new one in my future.
