Default 930 Production/Import Numbers

Does anyone know a reliable source to find out how many 930’s were produced and imported to the US, broken-down by color if possible? Thanks in advance for any input.

I don't think the detailed info you are looking for on the 3.3's is available anywhere other than perhaps in the factory records.

Gabriel and Franz book "Porsche 911 turbo air-cooled years 1975 -1998" is the only accurate source of production numbers for all the turbo charged air-cooled 911's. It is an invaluable source detailing vin numbers, options production info for all models including LHD vs RHD turbo S etc. The only info I found missing was regarding Bob Linton's last 930 which somehow was not detailed.

Unfortunately color is one of the few things they don't break down and the factory seems to keep secret

There were a total of 1,257 (1,237) 3.0 L turbos imported to the US between 1976 and 1977. A total of 1,689 (1,669) 78-79 930's imported including both CA and regular spec cars. A total of 4,815 from 86 through 89 930's in US spec imported to US and Canada including the rare targa's, cabs and S cars.

Not sure if this helps or not.

Total world production exceeds 30k cars.

How many are left is anyones guess.

Gabriel and Franz make the same mistake everyone makes when counting 76-77 US 930 production- they start at VIN #1 but cars 1-10 were never sold or imported. Folks have described 76 #11-14 as prototypes but really they were pre-production cars. The VIN # for sold cars started at #11, so there were 520 US spec 76 930 sold and 717 77's.

That is good to know. I don't really follow these and if they are off by only 20 on all the turbo 911's that isn't bad. I loved the looks but driving them was IMO a bit of a nightmare. I didn't really enjoy the 930 with the 4 speed either but that is me. They did correct a lot of the issues with the counting of the 3.3l 930's and the 964's. Adrian and others including red book were counting 964 with vin numbers 001 to 060 as production cars both US and ROW. When you count all of those cars each year each vin number there were thousands of extra 964's everyone believes exist. Adrian's first edition on the 964 had 754 3.6 Turbos being imported as he double counted the first 288 which were 718 coded and sold in 93 as 94 MY cars along with adding in vin numbers 001 to 061. There are other models that he made this mistake with as well.

So other than the 3.0L 930 we seem to have accurate numbers for the rest. I will make a note about the 3.0l cars when referencing them again. This is a first since they have been produced. Still the best info I have come across unless the latest issue of red book has been updated.

It's the same issue with the 78 & 79 US 930's, sold cars start start at VIN #11. Ryan's new book will be the definitive reference for 3.0 turbo's, maybe he'll write one for the later cars.

I am surprised knowing how much research went into it. They do show the 80 & 81's starting at 11, the 82's starting at 51 and the 83's on up starting at 61. I know when I tried to get CofA's on my earlier 911's 79 SC etc PCNA could not offer complete info due to records from that period.

I guess eventually there will be a definitive resource. For now they seem to have most of it covered. I have to give them credit for getting so close. 40 cars over 4 years is far better than the info we have had in the past for many of these cars.

I will adjust my numbers for those referencing in the future. So can we say what is now listed as being accurate or are there other anomalies?

Regarding the production numbers of the 78 -79 930's, the 78 production run totaled only 461 units, leaving the total for 79's @ 1028.

Phil, thanks for that confirmation once again regarding the Vins .
I have VIN#12 with a production date of 9/77, Petrol Blue in color, it is believed to be the 1st US production 78 930 according to Barth.

So they got it right from 80 on but for some reason got 76 through 79 wrong by 40 cars. (10 per year). I am surprised especially since we had discussed the 001 to 060 of all the later models which everyone was counting. I would think they would double check all years knowing how this was overlooked for so long regarding so many Porsche's up through 94.

012 for 78? First of the 3.3l in the US quite cool.

Don’t you mean 461, not 641 for 1978 US 930s? And I think your numbers are off for ‘79s as well.
