Hi guys, I've been chasing a 930 for some time and finally found a very nice one with relatively low miles (30k), a recent engine out service with nice enhancements and aftermarket exhaust.
Here's my question - I was holding out for an '89 to get the G50 but getting a coupe in good shape is cost prohibitive. I've driven a 4speed and thought it was fine but I've been advised that's not the transmission to get.
I'm on my third water cooled 911- most recent is a PDK which is ridiculous, but all my driving is really weekend stuff on back roads.
Is the 4spd really that lacking? If so how much would a 5spd conversion cost?
Thanks for your help!

The 4 speed is a great Transmission. A 5 speed is nice but the 4 speed is more than capable. I would look for a car in the best condition you can afford, regardless of Tranny.

And I own an '87 and I find the 4 speed to be just fine as well. There are varying opinions on this, but I think that it is geared just fine and adds to the experience. You find better pre-89 values than an '89 and don't let the tranny stop you from buying. If possible, drive the car and see for yourself and ensure synchros are ok, etc.
(PS: I drove a 5-speed 91 turbo from '93-'01 and now own a 5-speed 94 turbo so know both transmissions)

Own an 89 with the 5 speed but have never driven the 4 so cannot give back to back comparisons. I rarely put the car in 5th, even on the highway. It is too tall of a gear for anything other than cruising. I would imagine that the 5 might rev a bit quicker than the 4 in 2nd and 3rd but the 4 is just as enjoyable as the 5. The beauty in these cars is in the direct feedback from the road through the wheel, the handling where you can feel the weight transfer, and the on/off raw power of the engine. The engine and the suspension make the car more than the transmission. No better car IMHO for "feel".

My 930 has a G50/01 swap. I spent about $20K on the gearbox, rebuild, gears, LSD, modification, etc.
The gearing is really nice when paired with a motor that can rev. My particular motor is a built 3.5L running ITB's and has a 8500 redline. The G50 pairs well with it!
The 4spd isnt a terrible trans honestly. However, it is a little quirky on back country drives. I used to find myself in a spot where 3rd was bogging the car and 2nd was too high in the rpm's. The G50 corrected this.
930's are great cars honestly. Their analogue nature is hard to replicate in anything today.
Imagine 700whp and 2600lbs. Scary fast.
