Default VIN not recognized by Porsche Dealer database

Fellow 911 lovers. I bought an 87 911 Carrera Targa from an older gentleman who says he had it for 29 years. Car is amazing and well cared for and preserved. He had clear PA title in hand.
I got a call from the tag store saying PA DMV could not recognize the VIN please send a pic of the VIN plate. I did and they have since issued title and registration. This started my curiosity to check the VIN. So I called my dealer and they said Porsche does not recognize the VIN. I have checked the format of the VIN and everything looks right. VIN plate in dash and VIN sticker on hood match and the last 6 of VIN plate match last 6 of Chassis number.
I pulled the Car Fax and the first record on the report reflecting vehicle purchase is 9-21-1991 then it shows title issued or updated, and it says duplicate title issued 7-27-2007.
Again the VIN is consistent with a 1987 911 so it seems right. The owner says he bought it from a dealer friend around 88 or 89 he believes.
Does anyone have any thoughts on why Porsche does not recognize the VIN? any insight welcome but no wild conspiracy theories please...LOL

I have wondered if his "dealer friend" might have imported it and driven it on a dealer plate for a few years before selling it to him. any obvious ways to tell it is an ROW import?

Its a bit goofy. US cars had an CHS number in the sequence.

The 161 VIN range is for Targa's; the 171 range is for Cabriolets.

Why do you think it should be CJS? Would that mean it could be a euro car that was imported to the US??

I've edited my earlier response as I fat fingered when typing it, further confusing things. H is 1987. J is 1988. H is correct.

It's the 8 that doesn't check out according to Paternie's Redbook, but he's been wrong before. He says it should be a C. A Z would be there if it was a grey market car. Maybe the 8 is right for US market, but it's the only thing I see that could be off.

did you see the link I posted for the ebay car with the exact same VIN sequence. I emailed that guy to see if he has background on that car, he said he has original window sticker...

well that made sense so I called and they found the car. 100% legit and they said the reason it did not show at the dealer is that for cars older than 1990 sometimes they dont show if they are never serviced at a dealer. Since this car was serviced for 29 years by an independent shop it never got into the dealer system. Still not sure the anomoly on the car fax but at least I know it is not a totaled car or a Gray market car!
thanks for the insight everyone!
Rick

Don't know why a grey market car would be concerning.
