1984 targa stalling on long drives

Hello All,
i have searched the forums and cant seem to find a situation quite like the one I'm having. I have an 84 targa with around 130k miles on the clock. It's runs and drives great, but on long trips (1-2 hours at least) it starts to sputter like it's not getting fuel and dies. This happens while it's driving, not at a stoplight or anything (freeway twice and city steets another). I've changed the fuel pump relay and a shop even swapped out the ECU thinking that was the issue as they couldn't find anything else wrong. The car needs to sit for hours before it can drive again. Temps all look good so no over heating going on.
My question is, what should I start with? It's a crappy problem to test as I have to drive a long way to see if it happens again and risk having to get towed (again...). My dad and I own the car are are coming to a point where we almost don't want to dive it for fears of it dying on us. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

It happened again!!!
hello all! sorry for bringing back a dead thread, but I just got the opportunity to see if the problem I’ve been having has been resolved. I drove my 1984 Carrera for an extended trip for the first time since my last post here and almost identical as last time the car stalled after around 80 miles. It starts back up if you let it sit for a few, but only gets another mile or so until it sputters and stalls again. Had it towed (fourth time now). It’ll drive fine again if left overnight, but I was on the side of the road and needed to get the car home. Since my last post I have (or my shop) installed the following new parts.
New speed and reference sensors
new fule filter
new ignition coil
new dme
ecu has been tested and passed
new fuel pump
new cht sensor
new battery
car runs perfectly, but still hits a wall at 1.5 hours or 80 miles. I just can’t think of anything else and my shop (Air cooled Porsche specialist) are just about out of ideas. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you so much in advance!

OK, I'll take another swing. Could the gas tank Ventilation system be plugged? It would make sense that the engine would stop after prolonged driving because you would be trying to pull gas and the vacuum created eventually limits flow. After stopping you might get some reequillibration. Try removing the gas cap immediately after the next time it happens

Thanks for the reply! I never thought of that! I might try going on a shorter drive (just in case) and opening the gas cap after around 30 mins. If there is a problem with this system it should making a hissing sounds like it’s sucking excessive air correct? I looked around a bit on this and haven’t found a whole lot. Something about a carbon filter and vent lines. Anyway to test this system in the garage? Thank you for the help!
