UPDATE: car went out to media blast so that we could start over.....got a big surprise..at some point my car got a vin switch and it clearly was not a 72 since the oil filler door has been grafted in as well. To say shocked is an understatement .....well the shell is worthless unless someone wants to make a race car out of it. What I find surprising is that the car was suppose to have been media blasted before my project started and a blind pig could have seen that both the vin and oil filler door were switched. Investigating.....and very Pissed off...

id say the tags, title and oil door came from a rusty car and was put into a less rusty tub.
I wonder what the tub was before the swap? most likely a 69-71 T.
As a hot rod, it would be fine to use the body since you are doing color and powertrain changes.

The VIN certainly matters for resale value, but far less on a car that is in no way original anymore. The value in a car such as yours is in the materials used, time spent, and quality of the work performed.
Whether ignorant or nefarious, that is an unfortunate find.

even if the vin was not the result of a stolen car and someone along the line pulled it out off a wreck or rusty heap it is not really a 72 that came with that vin. To me it is same as having a stolen car and would never want to be on chain of title knowing it was not legit. I have tons of expensive parts and can go find another legitimate shell and then but it all together or just part it out and call it a day. Also discussing options with the builder of the car.

No luck with these cars. Too bad it looked like a great project.

Sorry to hear that there are people out there willing to do anything to make a buck off someone else--and to butcher a Porsche is sacrilege.
My vote was for Charturuse. It's a stellar color. Don't give up. Just find another body and start again.
Aubergine was also a great color but being dark takes more effort to maintain.
Don't dispair! Move on.

Well damn. That's a super bummer. I probably wouldn't use it either. I'm sorry.
I've recently been seeing a string of different owners all posting chartreuse 914s on a FB group. What a cool old color.
