Got off the fence and bought an '80 SC Targa yesterday. Can't wait until the transport drops it off!! Already have some cosmetic touch ups planned, but thankfully the mechanicals are all recently restored. Thanks to all on Rennlist for the continual flow of good info and tips!
BTW, to you SC experts, two questions about my car above. Shouldn't it have a strut brace and if so who has the best product? Second, from my previous SC ownership I remember the 915 shifter as a little vague and sloppy. Would a Wevo be worth the investment or are there other choices here, like maybe leave well enough alone? Although the car has been somewhat modified it can be returned to stock fairly easily. The stock decklid and mirrors were painted with the car. The engine has been gone through but again it's stock (although with touches like a polished crank and carefully matched parts), and it has headers. Although the stock wheel has had the cross section increased I am replacing it with a Momo prototipo wheel. It is a matching numbers car in it's original color. I had no intention of changing ti back but I want to preserve the ability to do so. That said, any other suggestions from you gear heads out there?
All my off the shelf go fast suspension comes from Clint at Rebel S. I've gotten brake bits, coilover parts, spindle braces, double sheer steering, heim joints, rack spacers, bushings, and will likely trade out my old Weltmeister strut brace for one of his....if I don't make my own.
Looks like the deal is done on the new to me 78 SC (I've had had an SC in the past). It's on the East coast and I'm in So Cal. On top of that the PPI revealed a few things that need attention before I take delivery so the pic will have to do for a couple of weeks. I'm excited and it will make a nice bookend to my 09 turbo. And to the OP, it's a matching numbers original Talbot yellow car, love the color, seems like a slightly toned down speed yellow.
From the images, a very sanitary 1978 911SC. Attached are a couple of images of my wife's 1978 911SC, with its factory original Talbot Yellow paint (thirty-nine years now). The whale tail is a very early Turbo, and was installed at the factory (Werks I) before the car was delivered. The second image is of its front left fender and Fuch 7"x16" wheel and tire.
Type 2, Interesting that you posted the shots of your beautiful 78 SC today. I just received a few photos of my Talbot yellow version being loaded, I should have it early next week. I attended Lufegekuhlt a couple of weeks ago and there were hundreds of early 911's and not one in Talbot yellow. I love it's rarity and the orange hue, can't wait to see it in person.
bryan, that car looks great. Those door panels are a little weird, if it were me I'd consider finding some stock units and having the card reupholstered to match the seats, but that's just me.
Regarding your shifter question, I considered the WEVO, but to me it feels too artificial (and looks out of place) and not in keeping with the character of the car. I refreshed all the bushings in mine and it feels great now. Also, Swepco lubricant in the gearbox is a must and will make a significant difference in shift feel and smoothness.
Strut Brace: There are some different schools of thought. Some people think because the car uses torsion bars, a strut tower brace is unnecessary. Others like RUF-style with weld-in brackets that run the length of the shocktower in the trunk. And then there are the triangulated ones and if you want to go even more extreme the cross-bracing like the 935 which makes your trunk nearly useless. I would say the RUF-style painted semi-flat black would look the most correct in your car, but realistically you won't feel any difference on the street (probably not even on the track if you're running street tires).
Anyway, the car looks sweet. I had the same exhaust setup SSI H/E + Monty Muffler, but the Monty droned a little too much for me so I switched to a stock '74 muffler in stainless from Dansk. You can't go wrong either way. I'm in Redondo Beach and will keep an eye out for you. Don't feel weird if you see a guy in a blue SC or purple Miata honk and wave, it's just me!

Edward, I'm twice bitten on SC's, I owned one for several years back in the 90's. Many cars since including my 09 turbo, but I kept thinking back to that air cooled SC. Just don't ask about the price difference between the one I sold vs the one I just bought.....now to get it smoged without putting all that crap back on, anyone out there know of a sympathetic smog station in So Cal?

Thanks, I do have a smile on my face. As the car is new to me (only the second car I've bought site unseen) I'm not sure on the wheel widths. They are 16's, an option on 78 SC's I believe, they are probably 6&7's or 7&8's, I'll have to check. They were refinished to an ‘RSR’ finish by Rick at Fuch Wheel Restoration Service, Costa Mesa CA.
Ok, I have a 1979 with the 16" option (6&7), but I dislike the uneventful transition from wheel centers, to the chamfered edge on the Front (6") wheels. I'd love the look of the rear 7" on the front, with a deeper lip for the rear. The sizes of yours are basically what I'm looking for.
When you find out what the sizes are, please give me a shout if you remember!
