I am definitely open to SC / 3.2 and other 70's - 80's years. I shouldn't have said "early" perhaps. I mean anything before a 964.

Only interested in coupes (no targa/cab). Ideal car would probably be a mid-70's with galvanized tub but engine swap to 3.0/3.2 and backdated bumpers.
Yeah, that white one that was on BaT is available again...I met the owner and looked at the car since it's in my neighborhood. The BaT buyer was a flake and disappeared after the sale.

The car is very nice, seller is genuine guy/Porsche enthusiast. Here is the car next to my 911 Turbo.....

Wow F4 and Upshift, beauties!

Upshift sent you a PM but guessing you are out of my range.

I need to stay below $50k, have seen quite a few nice backdated short-hoods in that range, including one 4 hours from me that I missed THIS WEEK

Oh well...they continue to pop up occasionally. Thanks all.

Yeah, $50k barely covers the Gamroth 3.6 and the trick tranny. But if your ever in Houston we can go for a ride!

What are 930 Turbos going for now? Say, second generation 930s.

What are they getting or what are they asking? Some are asking $180K, but there are plenty to be had at $120K....and I've seen them lower.

I can't read the text:

The pic of the Turbo just made me curious about buying one. I went through all of the gyrations in 2000 when I ended up buying the Carrera. The Turbo was maybe $10K more than a comparable 911. Nice G-Series 911s were going for around $20~$22K back then. People were really not paying attention much to the G-50 transmission, or small differences to the DME etc. I had to look really hard to find a good 911 at a decent price and found mine advertised for $18.8 and bought it for $16.6. I realized that the 930 was not much quicker, and would command a significant premium in both price and upkeep. A good analog would be to compare a Cayman "S" to a "GT4".

be careful to avoid buying cars with things on them that are not worthwhile

giant brake bling does nothing but weigh down your suspension

fat tires give more stick but reduce steering feel - decide if you like that tradeoff

digressive shocks YES; remote reservoir shocks - why?? (unless you are a hard hard racer, esp. off-road)

etc. etc.

That's a very good point.

IMO, the best factory features to look for would be factory sport seats (at the top of the list), any sort of limited slip diff, and any sort of special limited edition stuff.

As far as my own mods, by far the best one was the Wevo shifter, 930S steering wheel, and adjustable Renline gas pedal.

Jay Leno made a great comment about wider tires. You can't dance in work boots, that's why they wear slippers in the ballet. These cars were designed to be light and agile. They really really need to be light.

And thinking more about that price range, a late model 987.2 would definitely fall into that range. You'd be looking at around 320 BHP vs. 180, and quite a bit more weight and much stiffer suspension. A 911 of any year is a GT car if you are to be honest, while a mid-engined Boxster or Cayman are at their best on short hops of 45 mins or less.

well, the limited slip diff is another one with benefits and detriments

one needs to think carefully about driving usage, race vs. street etc.

I have a 930S steering wheel on my '73 ... sometimes. r type S/T type RS type... lots of possibilities. In a few more decades I hope to settle on one steering wheel to use; one wheel to rule them all - one wheel to find them - and in the darkness bind them

That would be fun

Almost bid on the 1978 RS backdate on Barrett Jackson tonight but details on its 3.0 engine were pretty sketchy and it looked a bit rough in there.

Exterior / interior were spot on though. Car sold for $60k.

What are the downsides to an LSD? I've got the 220 and Peter Z says I'm a lucky man. Makes for great burnouts.

Helps with braking while cornering, keeps the inside and outside wheels together on tight mountain switchbacks....I see no downside...

Come over anytime!

But maybe you better wait until I can get a 930S steering wheel to compensate for all of the worthless crap on the car.

I heard a rumor the PAG was getting rid of the big tires, brakes and trick suspension on the GT3 RS because it ruined the feel!
