Default engine hood lift support question

my car came without whale tail. I purchased an engine hood with trunk lid, same one that would come if factory installed.

the lift support (little gas shock absorber look alike) won't hold it up. I thought it might be worn, bought a new one

http://www.autohausaz.com/pn/SG406008

still won't hold it up. is there a trick I don't know?

thanks!

Mine is an SC that I, too, added a "Carrera" tail. This was long ago, but I recall putting in the supports from the Turbo ...designed for the stock whale tail from that car. That should do it

Hi,

I can tell you one thing,....you REALLY REALLY need the matching front lip spoiler to balance the car at speeds over 60 MPH, otherwise you suffer high-speed wander and understeer.

Factory spoilers were designed and intended to be matched components and installed that way.

For my 911 Carrera with tail, I carry an expanding rod to hold the lid open. I have never found shocks that will hold it for long. There used to be someone that sold a locking mechanism for the shocks.

When there is a tail, I think there are 2 struts on the driver's side used to hold it up.
Can you post the expanding rod you use?

My factory whale tail has 2 gas struts and they hold up the hood just fine. My struts are on both sides.

looks like mine is missing a mount on the right side so I will have to live with the idea that the hood can stay up by itself :-(

according to Paul Frère, without the front air dam the total lift is about 55kg in the front, and with it it is reduced to 17kg at 250km/h (~150mph).

the differece is a good 38kg at that speed. but he speed has a square factor on aerodinamic lift, not linear.

the difference is therefore reduced to a mere 6kg at 60mph and 13.7kg at 90mph.

Unless my calculations are wrong, the imbalance is something to worry people consistently driving a speeds higher than the average speed of a LA freeway and could be easily offset by keeping the fuel tank full or some weight in the luggage area.

Furthermore, the exit ramp from my garage has an aggressive uphill and I always scrape the front reinforcement bar (the one ahead of the condenser) no matter how careful I go over it. I think the benefit of the improved handling would be offset by the requirement of replacing the air dam every couple of weeks... but I got your point, If I ever need to drive fast, remove the rear spoiler or add the air dam!

You can make the factory mount out of sheet steel, which will allow you to install a right side factory strut.

Once you do this, the engine lid with tail will perfectly swing squarely, even better than the engine lid without tail and a single strut. I pop riveted this to the engine firewall. Works perfectly.

Next time you've got the lid open, can you snap a photo?
