Default Carpet replacement

I'm getting ready to pull out my seats on my recently purchased SC to spiff them up with Surflex. The carpet is in decent condition, but I am considering replacing the carpet while I have the seats out. Does anyone have a recommendation on the options for a replacement carpet set? How big of a job is replacing the carpet?

I just found the Lakewell website. It appears to have everything I could wish for. Now the question is how big of a job is it...

It's big. You have a lot of curved surfaces. That's what makes it insane. It's also critical that you put the various pieces down in the correct sequence.

Just plan on taking a lot of time.

I went to Bob at www.Appbiz.com for my Perlon felt RS carpet kit and RS/RSR door cards. He used a mix of cutting dies to make an RS carpet for a cabriolet....crazy, I know. It was at my door in a couple days. Not exactly easy to install, but totally doable. Take lots of pictures of your old carpet before you take it out. Understand there will be trimming and stretching involved. You only get one chance to get it right.

Default Appbiz Carpet

I realize this is an old thread, but had some input anyway. Actually, I haven't been on this forum for many years, even though I have owned multiple Porsche models since the early 70's ... several 914s, a couple 911s and a couple 912s - and a Cayman.

I met Bob from appbiz many years ago, back when he was starting to manufacture Porsche carpet sets. I purchased a Perlon trunk set for my '67 911 on ebay, and found that his shop was only a few miles from me - so I visited his shop to pick up the carpet set.

Bob showed me around the facility and I inquired about purchasing a tan interior carpet set for my '66 912. Unfortunately, he didn't make interior carpets for the SWB cars yet, as he didn't have a pattern to copy. Well, I had a gray loop carpet set I had purchased from G. Serrano years prior. Bob asked if he could borrow it to copy the pieces. I said sure, and he made me a tan Perlon set for letting him borrow the gray set.

As time went by, he started making sets for 914s too. I purchased a full on tan Perlon set for my '75 914, interior and both trunks, as well as some extra fabric to cover the rear firewall.

As his business expanded, he moved into a larger facility down the street from another friend's Harley shop in Harbor City, CA. I'd stop in from time to time just to see what he was up to and pick up product for cars I was restoring. Around 2010, one of my brothers approached me about getting some shop space to store and work on our cars. We looked at a few locations and coincidentally ended up leasing that same shop in Harbor City, as Bob had relocated again to an even larger facility in Wilmington.

I've only been to Bob's new shop a couple times since around 2013 or so, but will need to visit him again as I want to purchase some additional tan Perlon fabric to recover the interior panels and parcel shelf in my '66 912 that just came out of the paint shop with a fresh new color - my favorite, Bahama Yellow

.. so to get back ion topic ...

The carpets as you likely know are all glued in .. so to replace carpets you have to get the old carpets (and remnants as they will tear ) out and all the glue attached to the body . I haven't done it , but what i have heard and read it is quite the miserable experience requiring a lot of mechanical elbow grease and some chemicals. So expect to be at it for a while. Then because you are gluing the new carpet back in , you better know where it is going to go exactly. I'm sure the carpet suppliers will know what to recommend to get the old carpet out .

Its a two or three day job. Take lots of pictures. Citrus cleaner or 3M adhesive cleaner for the old glue.
A heat gun comes in handy.

first if it is not badly worn I would have it dry cleaned. Secondly if you absolutely need to replace it, the kit autos international makes is superb
