Default Shop Caught Fire - Who Pays?

What happens if your car is in the shop and the shop burns to the ground? Who pays? Here.

Can't answer.. just to chime in that the photo is a very sad one... wow...

Something like this happened, not too long ago, with a shop that had early 911s and several 356... somewhere in California I think... can't remember the details.

This is especially important if you have your car in a restoration facility where it might reside for several years.

Ideally, the shop owner should have insurance to cover the cars under his care. However, due to costs, it rarely works out as such. It creates a messy situation where finger pointing occurs and the car owner spends years trying to recover his investment.

A shop that is underinsured is probably not going to have enough cash to make the car owners whole - even if the car owners sue the shop.

That shop pictured had many collectible and rare cars the one in the picture an original
unreplaceable low vin like three or four '73 factory RSR , I doubt this shop provided or could
afford the insurance required to cover multi million dollar vehicles.
Unless the owner had the foresight to carry necessary riders for such an eventuality..
I have a friend in similar situation many multi million dollar collector cars in his shop , the owners if they expect coverage have to carry sufficient coverage to help them sleep soundly
the shop can't and wont be able to carry it and stay in business... Bert

Even if the shop is fully insured the insurance company is not your friend. You are not the customer.

If you keep your car insured while it's being restored and something bad happens you have an advocate. Your insurance company will deal with your damage and then they will probably go after the shop's insurance company.

I was a little late Richard beat me to it.

If you own a car like that I would not let it out of my site without proper coverage.

Also keep in mind that as the restoration takes place your car is increasing in value. You may want to update the valuation with your insurance company periodically.

I agree with what's been said. It's going to be owner of the cars insurance. Hopefully it was insured properly.

It would depend on the the documentation. Did you sign a repair order? If so where does the insurance coverage run, to the shop or to the owner? Does the shop owner have this documentation, do you have it? Without knowing the fact situation, it is just a guess.
