1980 Barn Find

Hello, Looking for advice on a barn find I have found. It's a 1980 Weissach Edition (USA) that has been sitting for two years. The body and interior are in fine condition (though it has been repainted white to a good standard) and the car ran fine before it was left sitting. I was wondering what sort of cost would be involved in getting the car back into running condition. (The air hose above the engine has rotted) The car has 122K on it, the owner is asking 5K. Do you think it is worth getting it started and what would I need to do? Thanks for your time.

Welcome to Rennlist. 5k seems like a very fair price if the car isn't rusted badly. More info is needed though. Have any pictures? Will the engine turn over?

Im pretty sure those cars are galavanized so rust should be mininal

check for oil leaks under the car, clean the gas tank ect.

look at the wiring, oil lines

gas tank, battery pan, smuglers box,

Honestly I sounds like a real good deal targa i think 1982 body and interior no engine tranny gas tank sold on ebay 6500.

cosmetics were ok

personally i'd jump on it, keep quite on the details so no one screws you out of it.

but it sounds good if floor pans are good, all engine parts are pretty much there, cosmetics are good.

if he wants 5k offer him 4 and run with it.

the air hoses above the engine are most likely for AC unit

Even if once you buy it, you find it's not worth pumping what's needed into it, you could more than make your money back by parting it out. Offer like $3k cash and see what deal you can make. ;)

here are pics of the car. should I have it towed to a specialist and have them try and get it started? what would it cost to do this?

First, $5K in today's market for a solid, complete car looks like a no-risk buy.

That said, any significant engine work could run $5-12K, depending on what is wrong... that's worse-case. I'd budget about $1K to have the car towed to a specialist and gone over.... then you'll know, and go from there.

But, in good running condition, that car is worth at least $20K. Assuming that you are OK writing the checks, you could put $15K in the car and not be upside down.

Just looking at those pics, the condition of the car looks like a steal at $5k!

OMG! Buy it.

I wouldn't let it get away.

If you pick it up and decide to ditch the wing I could use it for mine. (Lost in the second time the car was salvaged--was in the hands of an ex-girlfriend and she got rear ended in stopped traffic on a freeway by a teenager.)

If you never looked up what it looked like originally, at least if it was the platinum version:

DoninDen 01-09-2015 08:49 PM

Did you buy it??

ADias 01-09-2015 08:51 PM

OP: If you do not buy it please let me know how I can buy it. :)

5k is the deal of the century. Go buy it NOW. If anyone else gets wind of it, it will be gone. Easily worth 25-30k if running and no major issues.
