CV Boot replacement question

I need to replace an outer CV Boot on my '86 911. I have the Bently manual and a friend who has done one on an SC. Any words of advice - other than it is a messy job? thanks

I just had all the boots replaced on my 911. I've heard that, at least for a 964, always use OEM boots rather than aftermarkets b/c the latter don't last very long.

It's a straightforward job if you can get good access , use oem boots , pack with grease , use the correct torque settings and make sure the boot jubilee clips are good and tight .

I suggest you disassemble the CV joint completely and clean it to check it carefull, unless you are 100% sure that no gravel got into the joint. Unless the boot just split, you probably need a new CV joint as well.

Be careful on the axle bolts and get the right tools (10mm hex insert socket, not an allen wrench).

Many shops don't mess around with boot replacements and slap new axles in. A bit expensive in the first order, but long term it probably makes sense also for the DIYer. That's what's been done on my car. I think if one boot goes, the others are about the same age (and soon ready to go), then some of the CV joints might have gotten hurt already by gravel etc. Its your call...

Make sure you use new axle end nuts.......these are a one time use lock-nut, correct torque is very important.

Good Luck,
