Engine Out Service, Upgrade, Clean Up
 

Decided to start a new thread that focuses on current project instead of confusing with the previous ones.

Many have been super helpful with details, suggestions on what to do with the engine out. My only talent - which is questionable - is cleaning up in there while waiting on parts.

So far -

1. Engine out by local dealer. Engine-less car and engine delivered to my little shop of horrors.
2. Have de-grimed the 30 years of semi neglect. (Late posts in thread "Stuff to do with engine out" shows.)
3. Interior partially removed (door panels, seats, some carpet) to "de funk" the old barn smell.
4. Alternator, ignition bits, fuel injection, heater blower, sheetmetal removed, refinished. (Alt being rebushed.) I have cornered the market on wire brushes, polishing attachments for my dremel. If your local store is out, now you know why.

Detailer dude is doing the paintwork and engine compartment today and for next 2 days. Says it's going great. We'll see.

Man, as much of a perfectionist as you are, I'm just trying to measure up!

I forgot. :) Oh yeah...

It leaked from every possible thing that held oil, and from a few that didn't. The poor car had been SUPER loved by owners 1 and 2, then owner 3 sort of neglected it for 5 years and I happened along, hungry for a project. So, I'm/we're attempting to catch it up on services, making it an awesome driver worthy of the marque.

wow... are you a concourse guy? well, you should be...

Ha! No, after I finish, the concourse police will be circling my house, screaming "You M491 Infidel!"

I plan to:

1) Completely update the AC to something that resembles functioning in Alabama.
2) Upgrade to H4s, painted rings.
3) Paint the Fuchs 'petals' back to satin silver anodized
4) Remove my tea tray factory tail and go 'tail-less'. (No tea trays will be harmed in this exercise. Looking for a no-wing tail now if you know of any.)
5) Remove and then set fire to stupid overly abundant stereo, amps, K40 radar, all aftermarket stuff. Fortunately not one hole was cut. Go for 'later model' Porsche radio/CD. What is a good choice for this?

I realize that's not too significant a departure, but hopefully enough to make this widebody a better daily ride. It had a chip and aftermarket exhaust when I got it (done at Brumos in early 90s, where it was sold new.) It is low miles (63k), has sport seats, and I'm liking it more and more.

Returns me to my roots. These cars are simple enough to be approachable; sophisticated enough to be exotic. Great mix.

All you have to do is post a photo of your car in running condition and I am instantly envious.

UPDATE - This week I ordered:

1) All lines, hoses, gaskets, sending units to reseal motor.
2) All shifter bushings, couplers I could find
3) Full ignition tune parts (cap, rotor, plugs, wires)
4) Fluids and filters
5) Full AC upgrade parts from Retro-Aire
6) Set of Bridgestone RE-11s coming
7) Big weekend planned with wife out of town. (Translation: 100% involved with items 1-6!)

We'll see how it goes. At this moment, parts suppliers love me.

I think you are doing a nice "personalized" car that is totally consistent with the spirit of the original car.

I wouldn't sweat replacing the tail... as long as you keep the original, I personally like the cleaner look on the wide-body.

You are doing this right.... keep the photos coming so the peanut gallery can dream.

FINALLY! After being out of town for work and too little pleasure, put in some time to finish my little part of the engine tidying, then off to the Porsche dealer/old school senior tech. I get to finish up the chassis work while he's doing the re-sealing magic. This has been a job. The hook awaits!

Wow, looks a lot like my engine. In 1984. Those look like '85 spark plug wires and the vacuum pipe was cropped out. Very nice looking!
