New 930-10 in my SC

saw an article about Howard Freeman in 'Excellence' and then picked up a Pelican thread where he mentioned he'd rebuilt an '83 930-10 ROW. It had 6k on it and he got it back due to the owner totaling his car (front end). I called him up and we worked a deal....so last week I drove the 1600 plus miles to his place to do the swap (he took the 930-16 in partial trade).
Long but easy drive I 10 to Pecos Tx, then I 20 to Meridian Ms. Lots of 75/80 mph speed limits and long sweeping roads.
[ The drive out took 25 hours over 2 and 1/2 days...the only issue was storms in west Texas, luckily the hail (golf ball and baseball sized) was north of my route in the pan handle.

The SC was great, the 230 k motor burned about 2.2 quarts enroute but got 24 mpg avg between 70-90 mph.

Really enjoyed the wheel time in the Porsche.
Howard met me in Meridian and was kind enough to offer me a stay at his place while there.

We put some Kroil on all of the oil lines and got a bite to eat...Howard decided to drop the motor Friday night, I was going to help but basically got out of the way as I'd of been in the way...handed him tools etc...it took about 45 minutes and he was taking his time and talking

Howard had the 930-10 on the stand already...with SSI's and all of the plumbing in place

The muffler is a Dansk. The lump has the original cam and everything from the block out is rebuilt...the block has 73k miles and when I drove off the top end 6k.
Nice to have the Nickies too. All of the senders etc are new,
BTW, that fan paint job is Howards 'signature' as he's a pilot too.

Sat we cleaned everything up, removed the tranny etc.
Howard had a new clutch on hand so we put that in, my clutch was pretty good and so was the basket but the throw out bearing was toast...one of those while there deals. I'd had some 'in line' tranny noise and that was def the throw out bearing, very quiet now.

Bill, friend and Porsche neighbor, came over and took my tranny to power wash it, Bill is an excellent body guy and 356 Guru.

The flywheel was vg on my eng so we traded over, you could still see the machine markings on the face

Bills son Joey came by and helped out.

I'll post some more tomorrow....the whole trip was excellent and Howard and his friends made it more of a vacation that a business deal.

Sat we got the 930-10 ready to put in and I cleaned up my engine bay
The old pad came out in one piece and I did a bit of spray painting too

Reiver 05-19-2013 05:00 PM

I brought an apbiz closed cell foam pad that fit perfectly
Did a lot of degreaser work too but all in all not to bad of a clean up

Reiver 05-19-2013 05:05 PM

So the new lump is ready to go in, everything cleaned up...new clutch, new motor, whoopee
all of the rubber surround seals in the bay were in good shape so armor all'd them...Howard uses his rear lift arm to lower the motor onto the jack...no saddle as he doesn't like them..he finds the balance point then uses the blocks until ready to mount.

Sat night Howard made some Louisiana red beans and rice, most excellent and I sipped Knob Hill bourbon while he drank some wine and we talked cars....He rebuilt the motor and mechanicals while his friend Bill (down the road) did the bodywork on that 73 Targa outlined in the Feb 13' Excellence article "The Gift". Great story and she really did get that boob job.

Sunday morning (not so early due to a late nite Sat) Howard basically 'tossed' the 930-10 into the lowered car....he just uses the jack, I helped balance altho he often does it himself...he knows the exact angle so a bit of lift, angle to the tranny nose, a bit more lift and shove...boom in...just took a few minutes.
