Default no brake lights at all on 1989 911 carrera

These forums are incredibly helpful. All of the sudden my brake lights aren't working at all. Reverse, blinkers all work fine. Where do I start trouble shooting? This is my first older Porsche I have purchased knowing work was going to be needed. I want to do the work myself. Thank You!

The pressure switches on the master cylinder are usually the culprit, and a simple fix.

Total/multiple bulb failure is always possible, but unlikely. I would check the brake switch at the brake pedal first [CORRECTED: 911 has brake pressure switch on the master cylinder]. If that tests ok, possible wire break needs to be traced. My money's on a failed brake pedal switch.

there is a brake pedal switch ? i thought the only switches were pressure switches on the master cylinder as Ed mentioned.

I stand corrected. I mistakenly assumed the car used a traditional brake pedal switch.
I admit I'm not a 911 expert, however both our 944 and Boxster have switches on the pedals.

The pressure switch failed on mine last year; pedal needed progressively more and more pressure to activate brake lights. Changing the switch is easy IF you have a deep offset 22mm box end wrench. Expect a little dribble of brake fluid; keep a rag underneath and don't waste a lot of time.
