Default A dilemma regarding a 1977 911S

Hello all,

I am a long time lurker on these forums and have at various times in the past five years come close to purchasing a p-car yet never actually pulled the trigger. 928, 968, 996, 997... all close calls in the past at various places in my life.

I have been raised a Porsche guy with my Father and his brother owning a half dozen p-cars between the two of them over the last twenty years. One car that has remained in the family since I was very young is a 1977 Polar Blue 911S.

After nearly twenty years of ownership that saw an engine rebuild and other important servicings, the car's owner has decided it must go. I have been presented the the opportunity to purchase this car and am debating the merits of owning a 35 year old 911 in what is one of the most least desirable years.

The seller, my uncle, is asking in the neighborhood of $14K and with it will come an extensive record of maintenance as he is the third owner and has had the car for approximately twenty years.

Before this weekend I never considered buying a 2.7 for obvious reasons but the fact that the car has been so well sorted and is so drivable compels me to do otherwise. Is this a good way to finally take the plunge? I appreciate any and all advice!

A nice 77 911 with known history is a good buy at $14k these days.

And with a re-built motor, you might really have a good buy, depending on how the work was done, and parts used.

knowing what you are getting makes it a good deal. If the eng has been taken care of and the stud issue squared away why not?

+1 It sounds like it was in the right hands with the previous owners. I wouldn't think you would have any major issues plus your getting Polar Blue Keep us posted on what you end up doing and take some pictures.

"Rebuilt engine" means a myriad of things. Doubly so with a 2.7. Even with the records and family connection, I'd still invest in a PPI by a disinterested third party. I'm guessing in FL you don't have any smog check issues. '77 was the worst of the worst, if you need to keep the engine with all original equipment.

Knowing the owner and the car, I'm certain that the work done on this car was nothing short of meticulous.

Anybody recently or currently own one of these cars? How much fun are these to drive?

They are tons of fun - even with a 2.7.

The 2.7 "middies" are really under-appreciated IMO.

That would be a fun car to own if it was maintained as meticulously as you have described.

The 74-77 911's are the only domain left for affordable air cooled 911's. The early car prices are crazy, nice SC's and Carrera's are mid $20k cars any more. I think a well sorted 2.7 is a good alternative to any of these for quite a bit less money.

Yeah, except there are maybe three left in the world that haven't beat into complete POS status. I ran both of my shops during the wheelhouse of when these things were: 1. originally falling apart, and 2. later when the original half-assed repairs were failing. I'm not especially proud of how I fixed some of the cars, but I think I was honest with the owners about the kind of repair received in the context of the cars being worth $5-8K. (Yes, even 20 years ago there were $8-10K engine builds on these things. And on one of those I found the engine case wasn't completely Timserted.)

Absent a CIS Carrera, or any factory 911/83 engined car, I recommend extreme caution on this era.
