Sorry to bump an old thread, but The Tire Rack is now showing the original front size for 911's on their site in the Pirelli P6000 model in 185/70 R15. $202 per tire... I'm "this" close to snagging a set of these...

Jay,

There have been some posts on the early S registry on these tires, the response has been favorable. If you buy a set like to know your impressions. Love the brown 911, what color is it. I have a mocha brown 930.

Phil,

Thanks for the feedback on the tires from the Early S Registry board. That's good to hear. I'm kinda due for tires just due to age...so I might just do these. I was hoping the Tire Rack would finally get the 185/70 size.

Love the 930!

My '84 was a paint to sample car. However, it appears to match exactly to Bitter Chocolate which was a 1975/1976 factory color.

Dougal,

Thanks for the update on additional tire choices. I wish they made that Pirelli in the 215/60 15 size.

Just an update: Tire Rack now carries the 185/70 15 in the Pirelli P6000 with an N2 rating. I was holding off on buying these, but probably will pull the trigger on a set for spring...

Default 911 tires

We have the P6000 in the 215/60 and the 185/70. But these are modern tyres not designed to suit old cars.

I am not saying that Pirelli will never make the 215/60R15 in a CN36 but it is not imn their imediate plan.

There is also the Avon CR6ZZ in the front and rear tyres which are brilliant. https://www.borrani.com/en/avon-tyres/cr6zz.html

there is also the Michelin TB range but they are a bit racey. https://www.borrani.com/en/michelin-tyres/tb15.html

they are all on this web page. the pricing should be good. and carriage is often free.

Any additional thoughts on the above statement would be welcomed. Do the "old" tires that are re-issued in vintage tread patterns and designs offer a completely different ride and handling experience on our old cars verses a newer tire design (such as the Pirelli P6000)?

I can't say, but I have had the 6000's on my car (85 3.2 on 15's) for a season and a half now and so far, I can say I like them. I've probably put on 5k miles of all types of motoring. Bought them at the Tirerack for what I think is way too much $....but beggars can't be choosers in the 15" world. I can put decent 18" tires on my 993 for 2/3 the price. Cheers

Great info, thanks all. I've got an '80 with tires from the 90's on it and they must be refreshed. Stock 7 and 8x15's (Weissach Edition) and will have to get something safe on those wheels by spring. Ultimate performance not critical

Tyres designed in this period have more rounded shoulders to suit cars of this period. modern tyres have squarer shoulders so that when it lets go it lets go more violently on a classic car. they are designed to go with cars that have more caster.

https://www.borrani.com/en/185-70vr1...cinturato.html
https://www.borrani.com/en/185-70wr1...-p6000-n2.html

Tyres like the 185/70VR15 CN36 are made from Pirelli's new compounds because they aren't allowed to use the same chemicals they used in the day, so in some ways these modern compounds are better because they are greener.

I finally had a couple extra nickels (18,000 nickels to be exact) to rub together so I sprung for the P6000's. As usual, the Tire Rack delivered the new rubber in a day. So, stay tuned, the tires go on this week on my '84 and hopefully with the weather co-operating, I could have a test drive report by the weekend.

Now you tell me...!

It's good to have choices again in stock, staggered 15" sizes for older 911s. What's old is new again. I assume with the massive ramp up in air cooled 911 prices, a different consumer is now in the market and will pony up for expensive classic tires...

I've been out in the 911 three times since the new Pirelli P6000's have been put on the car. Tires track extremely well on the beat up back roads in my area. Much better than the prior Bridgestone RE960 AS with their V pattern in the tread. Ride quality has improved quite a bit, but again, new tires always ride better than more worn, aged older tires.

I've been out in sub freezing weather on dry roads and had no issues with tires in those cold pavement temps, but the car is stored in a warmer garage and I will not push a car on summer tires in sub 40 degree F weather.

The tires look fantastic on my old '84 911. Period correct.

As far as how the new Pirelli's balanced out, the Road Force ride quality numbers from the Hunter GSP9700 did not get into the single digits, but were acceptable in the low to mid teens (Previous Bridgestone's were in the single digits with one tire and phone dial combo not needing any weights to be in balance, so I'm confident my old phone dials are in good shape).

These tires are excellent for my needs, but keep in mind that I'm not auto crossing or tracking this car and am just driving on empty, public back roads on off hours during the weekend. There is a reason these things are N rated and while pricey, I think (initially), they are a good tire if you need the odd, rare stock 15" sizes.

Almost new P 6000s were on my stock Weissach when I bought it about year and half ago. No comparison on the Weissach with other rubber, but handle great in dry even at temps below 40.
Tires get noticed by knowledgeable aircooled folks at Porche events and cars and coffee, shows.

The new batches of CN36 tyres will be N rated as correct homologated Porsche tyres.

Earlier cars will handle better on the new CN36 https://www.cinturato.net/pirelli-cinturato-cn36 tyres, because the rounded shoulders of these period tyres will suit he car better and make the handling more progressive. Horses for courses.
