The wonderful PA winter we are having has me driving my 1980 911 about once a week lately. I was going to pick up a part for my 944 this week when I was cruising down a split 4 lane and I came upon a plain brown Ford with a funny antenna on the back that seemed like he just wasn't going to let this fancy little Porsche pass his "plain Jane" car. In a 55mph speed limit area I was approaching 65 when I decided I'd had enough and I pushed the pedal down and left the sucker in the dust. Looking back I saw RED and BLUE lights....pulled over, got my cards ready and the officer approached and laughingly said..."Didn't you see me?" Answering "no" and saying I thought he was just not letting me pass, the officer asked if I was just out loosening up the car on the bright sunny day. After he admired the car briefly he asked for my registration and license. When he returned from his "plain Jane State Police car" he asked me to drive carefully and to take care of myself and the 911. MORAL of the story.....maybe he was just a nice cop, maybe he saw a safe car, a concerned driver or the car gods were on my side for just one time!

Here in Coconut Creek, FL, the police have an Eleanor-like grey Mustang GT, normal looking Chevy Impalas, and other assorted stuff. Years ago when I lived in CT, the state police had Buick Grand Nationals!

Not having any police force members in my family, I just have no idea how these things get decided. If it's all just "revenue-ing," as some say, then no doubt you would have received a ticket. Seems budget crunches haven't brought forth a money hungry, ticket happy "new attitude" among the patrol. But, what has to go through this guy's head to make him say to himself, I'm not going to give this guy a ticket? And, what tips it the other way? I understand you would want to write the jerk a ticket, but what about what seems a completely neutral scenario here with an obvious speeder?

I've been on both sides of the coin myself. Feeling lucky to have been in a Porsche on some occasions, and feeling singled out because I was in one in others. I will say this. In my bP (before Porsche) years of driving, I think I got pulled over twice, definitely got one ticket. Since owning a Porsche, I've gotten a ticket with some regularity every couple of years and been pulled over a couple times without getting a ticket. The Porsche just does something to me, like Dr. Jekyll, Mr. Hyde. lol Sorry, officer, I was driving a Porsche. What can I do?

I guess I was lucky, I only got one ticket in Ruby in 10 yrs, and I'm not a slow driver. Although, I'm super vigilant, and keep it sane on the freeway in traffic, and in town.

Luckily, I've been able to get any/all tickets "taken care of" over the past many years...not a lot, mind you,..but a VERY clean record....I remain vigilant...so vigilant that the laser jammers go on this year,..will get to put this "light technology" to bed......(lierally).

I would bet a lot of if you get a ticket or not depends on the attitude you have. If you act reasonable and don't lie to try to get out of a ticket they are more likely to let you go.

,..and I would (equally) suggest that driver attitude (positive, that is) can sometimes get you nowhere....Come on,..you're in a frikin' Porsche 911....catch yourself a polici' dude who has an attitude and all else follows suit....it won't be the "mother in the Camry" experience.....must be handled in a very specific way (at least ATTEMPTED ....,,,, my experience).

As far as "betting",..well,...I would "bet" attitude would (better, "could") come into play (what have you-else- to lose?).

Stats sux,..as an engineer, I always hated that stuff......... care less for it.

Porsche owners (for the most part) are going to be people of "studied" backgrounds,...they know what they're up against when it "goes down",..just as in any other cases or conditions.....as you suggest: sometimes, it's very common-sensicle"""""""???"""""""

When the time comes, however, when one makes the choice to really push her on a public road (a BAD choice, I MUST ADMIT, for all of the obvious reasons),..and get's "tagged" at (say) 145 MPH, you can be rest assured (VERY STATISTICALLY-SPEAKING) that you're in a class yourself,..a legally-defined one, at that....the other "classes" bear their own fruit (albeit, lesser misery). Certainly NOT in some "20-25, over 70 limit"......I've a few friends who've hit the high speed sides and got nailed on laser,..all bad calls on friend's part(s), admittedly. I can assure you that they weren't tooling around at 90 MPH but were up on the 140 MPH side,..really pisses judges off when it hits the courtroom.....time to pay to play......a dangerous play, at that.

SIMPLE: those speeds should be relegated to the track or in that special place within Germany. In America, it will get you killed or in a bit of legal debt.

I have an ex-cop friend who says most people talk themselves into a ticket. My recent episode was I was on a county road in GA and a State Patrol pulled me over, I decided to go to court to see if I could get some mercy, the judge said good morning, looked down at the ticket and said dismissed, I have never had that happen or heard of it, he didn't even ask me how I pleaded. By the way in my county they have a Dodge Viper so look out!

I've always been cooperative, up front and polite, but I've not gotten out of many tickets, maybe 1/3. I've not had tons of tix, but my share in almost 40 yrs of driving.

My most recent ticket, I was in the 911 about 4 years ago coming back from Krispy Kreme on an early Sunday morning. Merged on the highway and decided to burst up to 100, then brought it back down to cruising with traffic... well almost. I was slowly passing the 2nd fastest car on the road. My mistake. Never be the fastest guy on the road. A minute after blasting to 100 Ponch in is my rear view mirror. I pull over and waited hands on wheel. First thing he says when he looks in the window is, "Wow, it's all orange," which it is with the lobster interior. OK, seems to like the car. May work in my favor, I'm thinking. Then he gives me the, "Do you know how fast you were going." I didn't lie, kind of. I said 91-92. He said, "Nah, I got you at 81." I played it off with some silly comment about a 30-year old speedometer.

So, not lying and playing it cool, calm, and collected wasn't good enough this time. I even had a full dozen, a FULL DOZEN, Krispy Kremes in the passenger seat within reach, and it didn't phase him. LOL I thought about opening the lid of the box for when he came back with the ticket, and maybe adding a little lettuce to the donuts, but better discretion prevailed.

I got stopped last evening at 1930 (in my RSX Type S), going home from work, for supposedly going 42mph in a 35 zone.

I had just gotten off work after a 13 hour day, still had to drive an hour home, and I was not happy. Luckily, this was in a very small town, that I didn't even know HAD a policeman, and he gave me a warning ticket. He was without a doubt the nicest, most polite officer I have ever encountered.

My Escort never even chirped, so I don't think he really tagged me. Nevertheless, I'm taking the alternate route home today.

I have been pulled over my fair share of times. I can truly say that attitude made little or no difference when it came to getting a ticket.

The only people I have ever known to get out of tickets with any consistency are beautiful women.
