Default How not to start a 911 when it's 20 degrees out

1) turn key half way
2) wait a moment
3) pump gas pedal 6 times
4) turn car over
5) and over
6) hold down gas pedal and continue turning over
7) Epic Fail

Now, the proper way...
1) turn key
2) drive away

My past experience with carburetted British sports cars and old BMW's left me ill prepared for this amazingly robust Stuttgartian super car. Not only is it faster than me, it also starts better than me.

I was about to brag about what a mild winter we've been having then I went out to walk the dogs and into our first snowfall of the winter. Seriously, it has rarely gotten below freezing this year and I've been driving the 911 almost daily. I will drive it to the airport tomorrow but since the salt will inevitably come out I will probably put it away this weekend. It's been a great six months.

Pumping the gas pedal is for cars with carburettors. It's never needed with fuel injection, at any temperature.

what Brit cars did you have? On my TR3 or AH 3000 it was.
Pull out choke.
Turn key
press starter button (do not touch gas pedal)
warmup, drive off and feather choke til fully warm.....
Any Fuel injected vehicle, turn key...drive.

Spitfire, TR6, 2002 (non Tii). All had their own unique starting protocol in sub-freezing weather involving choke and priming and sometimes pushing. Same with my R65LS, Darmah and 900 CR. Again, carburetion is the common thread. The Dell Orto's from the '70s were especially fickle when the thermometer dropped. I hadn't had any starting problems with the 911 until I messed with the SOP this morning. Turn key, drive.

Your '85 DME is going "Dude, wtf?". I was very happy for this level of reliability in 20F at 8,000 feet a few weeks ago in the mountains. As well as stock FI and stock chip.

And I love the 2002 Tii. Great car.

I just can't belive you're in NY and dont have salt yet .. good for you .. I was out the weekend before last .. we had tons of rain that washed all the salt and the Sunday was bright as hell and about -8C. Even my SC cranked up without a touch of the gas , took a few seconds though as it has been over 2 months since i put her to bed.
Ran great and had my mid winter repreive .. put it away that afternoon and got dumped on again ..
