HELP! high rpm sputtering in my 87 911
#18
FINALLY, after 2 hours of labor with Joe at European Motorsports in Vista, i am immensely happy to report that problem is fixed. When i pickup car i will get a better understanding of problem and solution was and will post it for the benefit of the group. Right now my understanding is it had something to do with the head/ crankshaft sensors.

"it had something to do with the head/ crankshaft sensors."
But in the initial post it was stated:
"we then ruled out the speed sensor."
So most probably assumed that it was replaced or new, and such,
no one on Rennlist suggested that the sensors needed checking.
Bottom line: Mis-information/analysis can waste time and money.

I local friend as an 85 Carrera exhibiting the same symptoms. The car runs fine until it is warmed up. Then it is sputters hard like it's not getting fuel. I drove the car steady at 60 mph in 4th gear and it comes and goes even at half throttle. Don't know if it makes any difference, but the tach acts strange. The bounces around and the shift light blinks on and off when the car is sputtering. When the car is running normally, the tach needle still swings like it's loose.
Any ideas on what to check will be appreciated.
Thanks,

Carrera that sounds like the head temp sensor for sure .. there is an easy way to verify without swaapping parts. . once the car is warmed up unplug it and bypass it with a paperclip. if your problem goes away you will need a head temp sensor .. When you look in the engine bay on the left it is the upper most of the 3 connectors. you want to juper out the end that goes to the dme . i think it is the loose end not the end in the bracket i think the end in the bracket is the actual sensor. let us know how it goes.
