Bumpers and spoiler
Hi friends,
I am looking at a 1984 to replace my 01 986 S and it would need three things: - Repaint the front and rear bumpers - Remove the turbo spoiler (that's not the tea tray, that's the one from the 930s) - Replace the front spoiler, it is all cracked Do you have any idea of the cost? If removing the bumpers is doable for a newbie and if it saves a lot, I could potentially do it myself. If you removed the bumpers yourself and did the re-assembly, I'd guess $200-$300 per bumper. Front spoiler is @ $300 for aftermarket, closer to $400 for OEM.
Is that an early non-intercooled 930 tail? If so, you could probably buy a used Carrera tail/decklid, paint and install. Then sell the early 930 and be in the +. |

That project is extremely simple.
A couple of suggestions for you to take advantage of while things are apart. While you have the bumpers off suggest that you repaint the front air dam (the thing the fog lights are built into). Have them use a flex agent in the paint and then that spoiler/air dam will handle rock and pebble chips a lot better in the future. Ditto for the fender extensions in the rear--do roughly the bottom half with the flex agent. Just emulate the line that is there already. While the large rubber bumperettes are off the rear bumper, check to see what the condition of the bumperettes is. Is there any rust forming near the mounting bolts? There are 3 as I recall for each bumperette. Use a good epoxy or resin to seal them up against further rusting. Also, use some of that resin on the bumperettes (the part that doesn't show) wherever the mount job was inadequate--sometimes steel that makes up the core of those massive rubber bumperettes is exposed--and that is the FIRST place to start letting moisture in, and soon they rot from the inside out. Seal them up before you put them back on the rear bumper. Be as proactive on that sort of stuff as you can be. It will pay off in many extra years of trouble free service. |

As for the rear spoiler, new ones are prohibitively expensive, so I would recommend a used one...perhaps someone on this forum might have a spare! |

If it were anything but a 911, I would be scared also. I wouldn't be worried about the "high mileage". They can handle the abuse.
Luckily, almost all of the parts are available for the SC and Carreras. You will love the oldschool feel of it, but if taken care of, it should provide a very enjoyable and reliable experience. |

That's a good question :) Well, it belongs to a friend of mine who bought it about 6 months ago. He had a PPI at that moment, it uses one quart of oil every 750 miles and the previous owner kept it 7 years (plenty of records). It already has the euro headlights (that I cannot live without on a 911 :D), I like the color, the body is clean (small blemishes of course) and it drives great. FYI, I am trading the car for $2k in my direction, feedback welcome :) Also, regarding the 915 vs G50, that is not an issue, I really like that rough feeling when I shift :) |
