Question 915 Trans Oil

Thinking about changing to Valvoline 85-140 trans fluid for my 130K 911T 915 trans. Should I go synthetic or straight? Does synthetic in an older trans have the same effect as in an older engine - is it more likely to leak?

IMHO, you would do a LOT better in every respect if you changed to Swepco #201 gear oil. This product is simply "magic" in Porsche transmissions using the baulk-ring type syncromesh and shifts better than anything else.

Use no synthetic in any 901-915-930 tranny; this will accelerate wear and not shift well at all.

I tried the lighter Mobil 1 in mine, and it didn't shift as well. I'm currently running 85/140, and it works much better, especially hot! I'm trying to find a source for Swepco 85/140

The general consensus is that the 915 type transmission should be lubricated with non synthetic oil and Swepco is the brand I'd recommend.

FWIW,................

In my 28+ years of Porsche-dom, I've not found anything better than Swepco # 201 85w-90. No need for anything thicker. Excessive gear oil temps should be dealt with by installing a cooler and pump.

We used this in 400 HP RSR's and 750+ HP 935's for many years with excellent shift quality and R&P life.

A local tech converted my 915 to Mobil 1. I started having very balky shifting problems in multiple gears. I switched to Swepco 201 and have been much happier. I was concerned with cold weather shifting with non-synthetic. No problem. I suggest you listen to everyone on this forum and go for Swepco.

You really cannot go wrong with Swepco in a 915 tranny.I did find a source for both weights of Swepco, 201-210.... Bobby Archer's German Motor Works in Ft. Worth Tx. He has a web site.

Cool

Does anyone know if Swepco 201 is available in the UK? I am currently running my '78 California spec SC on a synthetic gearbox oil which has an added friction modifier to help the synchromesh - it is supplied by either Amsoil or Redline, I cannot remember which. Anyway, it works great when the box is cold but is not so good when things warm up a bit. Any advice would be greatly appreciated

Cool

Here is a rennlist sponsor plug.

If you want to buy Swepco 201 then check out www.ritegear.com. I am not related to the guy in any way but he is a Rennlist Sponsor (check the sponsorlist) and a a PCA member/enthusiast. He sells the 80W90 for $36 and some change. Check him out since he helps keep the list going.
