I use Swepco 201...I think its great and a lot of guys swear to it. Maybe there is something better out there, I just don't know what it is.

Cool

I also like Swepco 201, its an 80/90W. Have noticed a slight improvement in shifting since the change over. The blue color is cool too.

Swepco 201, straight 90 weight.

For my (especially stressed) 915, I use Swepco 203, which has the moly added. For any engine that was stock with the 915, though, 201 is the way to go.

George,

Same recommendation as the others, but you might want to look at running a bit heavier weight from the torque of the V8. When I made the switch my downshifts were noticably smoother with Swepco 201...

For whatever reason, Swepco seems to not want to "mass market" their fine products. So you won't find them at Wal-Mart next to the Mobil 1. However, most of the parts houses we like to deal with (Pelican, Vertex, AJ-USA, etc)have it in stock. Also, check you local Porsche repair shop, as most of them know about Swepco and use it in customer cars.
The 201 gear oil is an absolute must in 915 transaxles. I'm going to try their 20w-50 motor oil sometime in the future.

Am I right to assume this advice is also good for the earlier 901 transmissions?

You can get SWEPCO through my site at www.ritegear.com , we supply you with most of your Porshe needs at avery reasonable price and can have delivered to your door via priority mail. SWEPCO products are in demand by other makes also as in Mercedes, Land Rover, BMW and many domestic haulers.
And yes it will work in most applications,I run 201 in my G-50 and my 930 trannys and even have seen it's use in the lower units of off shore boats. We have sold 714 automatic fluid to motor homes with Allison transmissions in them.
So if you need a gallon a quart or just a tube of 101 Moly grease we have it.
Thanks
Lane

Hi Doug...

I'm using it in a 901 coupled to a 3.0 Euro engine in my track car - and it's been excellent... It has many track hours on it after I rebuilt the tranny several years ago... I switched from Castrol...

HTH...!!!

Hi George..!!

I'm not sure if this helps with a specific 915 question - but I have a couple of friends who own 914 conversions (with Chevy V8s). I believe both use Swepco as well, but in a 930 inverted tranny.

BTW: do you have a short shift kit with your 915? Also - how does the 915 hold up with the power from your V8?

Best to you!

So far so good with the 915. I broke a mainshaft and second gear broke in 3 pieces about 3 months ago. I replaced the mainshaft with a 78 911 sc mainshaft and changed second gear and all is well. I think the 915 is a good gearbox and yes John I have the short shift kit in my trans porsche brand only for me. I don't have any problems with the trans except the older mainshaft that broke was a 77 model and the 78 is much stronger I'm told. John if the 915 gives me any more problems I am going to switch to a 930 4 speed trans but I really like the 5 speed a lot. I am going to switch to the swepco gear oil next week thanks for the heads up on the oil.
