This is Snap-On GCP 10 "Tool, Grease and Dust Cap" $63.55.

You will likely mar, scratch, dent the machined surface of the soft aluminum hub if you use the muffler clamp as a tool. So you spend $2 for muffler clamp that damage hub. Not good economy.
No you won't likely mar, scratch or dent the machined surface of the hub with the clamp. I had no issues, and there are a number of people who have had similar results. If one were to be concerned, you could use a piece of 1/8 x 1" or 1/4 x 1" flatbar to rest against the hub.

I agree wholeheartedly. When I bought my 76 a month ago, I flew down to Houston to pick it up. Left on a Sunday at 5am, arrived home in the NE on Monday at 4 pm, 1,981 miles in all, and by that time the car and I had nearly become one -- well, as one as a non-wrench like me can become.

Phil, where in SC are you located? Chas. is my old stomping grounds.
Floete, That is a pretty car. I, for one, like a 2.7 mid-year 911. I bet you have the **** carpet.

no, pretty stock. while inching along an onramp onto some superhighway in alabama, i saw the guy behind me pull out fast to the left at his first opportunity. he came up beside me and gave me the finger while mouthing, 'F*** you!" evidently he thought i was messing with him by accelerating so slowly. ha! i wish!

912E is currently tops in hipness for collectors, and 912's are hipper than 911's. Only 999 E's ever produced, or something like that. Beautiful car.

i have had no issue with the 2" clamp and used it for years .. Ed my point was a wouldn't want to be in there with a small sledge trying to drive out lugs .. Would much rather pop the hub off , use the opportunity to clean and inspect everythng and do the lug in the safety of my workshop.

rusnak's tool looks like the one I use. I wil see if there is a part number for the tool. Ed, I am sure the muffler clamps work well, I just like taking the easy way out and use the tool that is made specifically for the job. I work for Porsche so it makes things much easier for me

if you have a wall full of OE tools life is great .. for some of us however we have to be creative .. it is nice to see what the big boys use however ..seams Audi and Porsche have a whole seperate business unit that makes revenue just by inventing " special tools "

sig_a, there were 2099 912 E's produced. 100 to Italy and the rest to US. I owned one for 14 years and it was a very dependable car. Got about 35 mpg at 70 mph.

I didn't think I had that right. Only that they were low production numbers with nines in there somewhere. I stand corrected. Thanks.

No argument from me on that, that is why I said I'd remove the hubs-it ain't hard and allows some other maintenance.

I'm one of the first to go out and buy new tools. But, there is no need to buy a dust cap remover. There are many in 911ville that have used the muffler clamp with none of the damage that was forecast above.
