John Buffum with his '73 RS, circa mid-'70s (One of the first competition 911s that caught my attention as a teen, the other being the IROC cars.)

I would hesitate to spend good money on a car thats been "upgraded". We see a goodly number of these threads and it usually comes down to the same thing. Most of these ads will have you think that the car was purchased by a well heeled buyer(new), promptly converted to wide/slant status by the best body man in the country, then lovingly worshiped in the garage. Most well-heeled buyers bought what they wanted in the first place, and the conversion is a thinly veiled collision repair performed after a first time 911 owner "gin and tonic-ed" it into a guard rail only to let it sit and waste in utter disappointment in his garage(or at least until he could trade it on a Viper).
A body shop is a horrible environment for any car and there is slim chance an, otherwise perfect, Porsche was put there for some cosmetic enhancement.

Of the ~15 turbo/slant/RSR/RS cars I've personally done, and probably 20 more that I at least had a hand in, ZERO came in cosmetically damaged. (See thread on my '73, though I did not do that one myself.) Most of the cars that went under the knife in the '80s and '90s were merely used 911s that were striving to be a fake of the real thing. And when the real thing was 2-3X the cost of a fake, of course opportunity arose.

Now we can talk about "quality" of the conversion all day and night. But that's what an inspection if for. Then you can weigh each individual car on its merits. Ultimately, none of these SC/Carrera era cars in today's world are worth more than the underlying unmolested original in the same shape.

Ken, the cynic in me can run wild. My ultimate point is one that you make without hubris...quality. the original motive for the conversion is unimportant. AND, the value is not enhanced beyond the donor chassis - possibly reduced (depending on quality).

If the original SC cab interests the OP, and the money is ok, buy a Turbo and get the real thing. Or go for an RSR clone. If I were looking for a widebody, those would be my choices. Not to take away from M491's.

Shannon, I like the black one a lot better!! I think the black with red is a cool color combination.

Also, I dont know what mods they list in the description, but I spotted a 964 distributor and twin plug conversion. What else did they do? maybe euro pistons and a cam?

I don't like the boxed rockers, but that is personal taste.

Thanks for the feedback, this is the description from seller on the Black Coupe

I said 85' but its an '86 ! The current owner said a guy in Carmel bought/owned it and was going to race it, but 'supposedly' never did. My guess he did and blew the first engine out which is why there was engine rebuild at early age ?

1986 911 Porsche Coupe with Custom 930 Turbo Body Key Features 1. Professionally installed Turbo 930 Body. 2. 70,000 original miles. 3. Ruff Rims With Bridgestone Tires 4. Bremtek Brake Kit $2000 Value 5. T & D Performance in Campbell California Performed the Following: a. At 26,000 Miles Complete Engine Rebuild/Hop Up b. Regrind Cams to C-4 c. Valve Job / Fly Cut Chamber d. Twin Plug Cylinder Heads e. Match Port Intake Manifold f. Bore Cylinder to 100mm Pistons g. Carrello Rods h. $ 15,900 Total Cost Engine Work 6. Transmission Re-Built at 30,300 Miles $ 1,700 7. Just Normal Service the Last 15,000 Miles. 8. Only driven 2000 miles per year. 9. Garage kept only used in summer. This car runs like it looks- Perfect

Here is email from him on a couple Q's i had asked
1. We purchased this car in Carmel California on our anniversary in 2001. The history we got was that the owner wanted to race the car in the non turbo class at Laguna Seca and had the engine and car built for that class. It even had a roll bar that we removed. As far as we know it was never actually raced or damaged. I have never done a car fax yet but the car is perfect everywhere for its age.
2. The engine does not leak any oil, good compression and runs very good. The car has only 70+k miles.
3. As far as I know the car was lowered and has large racing brakes, see list of improvements.

That engine work is kind of foreign language to me....

Let me translate it for you....

$

It actually sounds fairly legit, despite a couple spelling misques on parts... I'm guessing the ad writer is the owner, not the builder.

You should make sure it runs on 91 octane if that's all you have in your area. That his been my biggest surprise moving to Topeka, Kansas

I'm thinking that thing would be a pretty fun road car. If the motor was built and tuned properly it might put north of 260hp to the ground. It would probably keep up with a stock turbo, without the lag.

I'd say the motor sounds good on paper-but it is highly modified, and one can only say buyer beware. I'm not totally familiar with Bremtek brakes, but I'd rather see Brembos or a factory set of something on the car.

You guys were indeed correct. The 1982 CAB in OP was indeed a Targa before restoration. Thanks again for disecting this car for me, I now know to ask myself deeper questions when I see these AM widebodies. I will most certainly be passing on the car......still contemplating the coupe referred to at bottom of page 1, but the MODS are probably more than I need. Meanwhile some interesting 930's keep coming up on EBAY.

You specifically commented that you weren't so interested in the 930 engine. Are you aware of the factory Turbo look Carreras (also called M-491 after the option code that specified the Turbo look package)? They're Turbo bodied cars with the standard 3.2 L Carrera engine. Just checking your knowledge given that you didn't know that factory cabs did not appear until 1983.

Yes, thank you. I am aware of the M-491 optioned cars......they come up infrequently, but I do keep an eye out for them.
