Good question really. I think it would be fine, but it is SOOO easy to take off if you have any concerns and it will reduce any unwanted wear on the AC clutch bearings. If you have a shop do a tech inspection, maybe you could ask them to take it off. I would do it for free if you were my customer and were concerned.
Good luck and keep your spirits up - you may be faster than you think!

Excellent. I never left the A/C belt on any of my cars during a track event, precisely because of what the OP is concerned about. Why introduce one more thing that might fail to an already elevated stress test for the car?

Leave it alone. To go faster, get more seat time and more proficient in the car.

Take out the spare, the compressor, remove all carpet, remove bumpers, remove passenger seats, radio and speakers and lastly remove your side rear view mirrors (you won't need them as you'll be passing everybody up). Just kidding ....Have fun!!

I always took out my spare, when I had one that would fit over my brakes, my toolkit, jack and compressor. You do remove floormats and anything else that is loose, so a few pounds do get shed.

Cool video. I surprised it didn't stall, looks like a 36hp type1.

LOL Pete

Ed, I always left the spare in the 996 and plan the same for the 86' - I do remove tools, compressor (air for tire) mats and everything loose.
normally I ran with very little fuel too, but they are advising for the DE to come with a full tank of fuel so I might opt to pull that spare just to get the weight off the front tires...

anyhow as stated - weight is not my concern... just the running of the pully for no reason

Many people with power steering run bigger pulleys to slow the power steering pump down and save it from overheating, cavitating or whatever else might blow the thing up. That is what sparked my original Q

Thanks all.... I plan to remove that heavy a$$ belt and really rip pit up !!

No question or concern is "trivial" (pleeaaze.).

I say take that belt off,...done.

BTW the car was wonderful at the track and the weight saved by that belt removal made my very first DE SOOOOOOO much faster

obviously I was in "D" class and will be again next time out. I did however ride in 2 "A" class cars and well.... I will be needing to remove more things from the car to drive like that...I thought about removing my head and finding a new/rebuilt one

anyhow thanks for the comments, I dont think it mattered either way, but I felt better not running that at high revs for 20/min at a shot
