Yo , 20 grand will buy a low milage y2k 996. If your set on a "classic 85" why not consider an 86 , it has a/c that works. Or an 87, that shifts 1-2 -3 .... and has a/c that works? Just a thought . How far will twenty GRAND go? Happy Hunting ! MJ

Hey, maybe a Y2K 996 is a good consideration, I never thought of that. A/C that works, 1-2-3-4-5-6 shifts that work, keyless remote entry that works, I hope the motor works.
Did you say 996...yikes. Ed, Whalebird, Iceman et al. thank you for all the input. For the time being my mind is set on the '86 gold metallic which is resting under a nice cover in the garage (of a long time PCA member) that is less than a two hours drive away. In 2005 (10K miles ago) the engine on this car was removed by a master Porsche mechanic, the heads, cylinder, and valves were completely inspected. Leak down and compression were all excellent. The original clutch was replaced since the engine was out of the car for inspection. The current seller (that time the buyer) was told that the engine cylinders still showed the original factory hone marks, which indicated minimal wear.
Now really... forget all the hoopla surrounding the G-50. Does anybody here think that it is outrageous to buy a pristine well cared for '86 coupe with original paint, immaculate service records includuing a new clutch 10 K miles ago ( now the car has 86K miles) for 22K provided the PPI checks out perfect. I dont. Now I just have to like the color in person. Looks really good on the pics that were sent.
It's not outragious at all. If I had your budget, and seeking a carrera, an 86 would be the only one for me. Get a GOOD ppi. A really nice car will require the tech too have a well trained eye. Any deal-stoppers will be under the surface.
Good luck, I think your onto something here.
Whalebird, the PPI that I have set for the car includes an engine compression test as well as: electrical system, battery/charging test, heat/air conditioning, brakes, suspension/chassis, exhaust system, tires, cooling system, belts/pullies, fuel system, road test, body inspection and additional notes. The master Porsche mechanic says if the compression numbers check out okay a leak down is unnecessary..any suggestions here. Should I have him do the leakdown anyway.
