Lightbulb installing spark plugs in 911

I bought some Bosch platinum spark plugs but cannot dislocate my shoulder enough to install these damn things. How is somebody supposed to install new spark plugs on an 84 911 carrera? Do you drop the engine?

I assume you are having trouble with the right side under the Air Box? You need to take the airbox off as it allows much more space to do it. LOL.

Been there, done that. The first time it took me several hours, wasnt fun at all. I suggest removing the airbox and then moving the a/c compressor and the heater hose(from the blower) out of the way. Also, the spark plug tool in the tool kit helps to get the plugs started. If you dont have that a sturdy piece of hose can help get things started.

Be patient. Be thankful you dont have a 993!

Chris has got the right idea. Remove the air cleaner and heater pipe and slide the A/C compressor towards the fan.

My first plug change in my '86 Carrera took several hours... After a few times, I could change them with one hand tied behind my back in the dark blindfolded in under 30 minutes.

Everyone has had GREAT suggestions so far...but I feel the need to add that the use of the adjustable Hazet tool, available from Aussenmacher Tools is a handy tool to have in your P-Car tool collection.

It's specifically for changing spark plugs on a 911.

Where can we get this tool? Do you have a part # or rough price?

A quick search found this:

<a href="http://www.samstagsales.com/hazet.htm#Spark" target="_blank">http://www.samstagsales.com/hazet.htm#Spark</a>

Looks like ~$40.

Airbox removal the key, the tool in tool kit worked well on my '86.

Important tip -

After the plugs are in, make sure that the flat rubber washers/grommets/whatevers on you plug wired are seated against the cover. These keep moisture from collecting in the plug wells and corroding the end connectors.

The foremost plug, passenger side( no. 6 I think) is the toughest to get pushed down, mechanics "forget" to do it. This caused an annoying miss in my car before I found it.
