Angry Alternator installation

Approx. how long should it take a decent mechanic who says he works on Porches take to install an alternator on a 77 911 3.0?

Thanks. I was charged for 5 1/2 hrs.
Seem excessive, I do not know.

I did mine in about 3-4 hours. It was my first time and I cleaned up everyting pretty well. One point to consider is if there were any rusted or broken fasteners it would surely add some time.

David,

At more than 5 hours your mechanic wouldn't qualify as a Formula1 pit crew!

As always there are many sides to all stories, but to install (only) an alternator requires no more than between 1 and 2 hours for a DIY person with basic tools.

Maybe your spanner took the engine out? He might be saving for the turkey for Xmas!

Best regards, Tom.

Thank you this provides some ammo. He's probably saving up for his own Porsche at my expense

I did mine in about 2 hours, if that, not counting the time I spent painting the fan. About 20 minutes to get the housing out, 15 minutes to get the old alternator out, 15 minutes to get the new one in, 20 minutes to get it mounted again. Plus a few minutes to disconnect the battery, tidy things up, adjust the belt tension, etc.

David,

Never done it before and it took me less than 2 hours. You might ask your wrench if he is charging "book rate" or actual time. Anyone who is not all thumbs can do it in less than 3 hours, anything more is blue sky...

Just swapped one out on a 84 carrera (w/ AC). Took about 3 hours. That's including the half hour I spent looking for a missing bolt. 5.5 hours seems a bit long.

Thom's estimate is right on the money. It should be a 2 hour job (max) unless there are problems. I did it on the third day of 911 ownership, I was very green. It's simple once you've done it once. I ended up having to do it twice due to a bad rebuilt alt.
