The 5/23/09 running of The "Targa Palomar".....
Well, there were only two entrants. But Douglas Bray and yours truly met out along Hwy 76 early this morning. It was nice to finally meet him in person, a great guy-don't let his online persona fool you.
We ran one of the absolute best Porsche drives in this country; it is absolutely a 9 or 9.5 out of 10. A rise up S. Grade Rd. of albout 3000 ft in 9 miles of severe twists. Then, about 12 miles down E. Grade Rd on the back side of Palomar with more sweeping curves and some longer straights. I've run Tail of the Dragon, and I'll put this up against that any day.
On a given weekend day, my guess is there are a couple of hundred "crotch rockets' making the climb, but they don't start until later. The early bird gets the worm: We were the only two vehicles up the mountain, which was kind of peaceful the couple of stops we took.
I enjoyed testing my new suspension mods. I must say, they were a success!
A few pics here for your enjoyment. Pretty spectacular looking down on the fog bank, the pics don't do justice. The view over Lake Henshaw also doesn't get captured, but I did get a pic of a large bird of prey. I even threw up a map of part of the route to show the shape of the road. Gotta love SoCal!

This was by far the most fun I have ever had in a car. The twisties just never ended. It was as if the mountain was designed for our cars. Once on Palomar Mtn. Rd. we did not see another car. I'm still speachless. I can't believe that road is in your backyard.

You know what I say? Autobahn, Schmautobahn! Who needs it?
That mountain WAS designed for our cars....or is it the other way around? If that don't make you believe in a higher power, I don't know what will....
The whole way home, I was thinking to myself, "if only I had an Old Milwaukee Light, I could then say 'it doesn't get any better than this' "!

That really was as good a day as you think it was.
....I don't know though Ed, my baby musta been draggin' an extra 500 pounds around that yours didn't have. Even so, what a morning!

It was 7:00 in the morning and rather cool out. Did you see the marine layer pic Ed posted? Trust me, when we got into Oceanside the top came down. In fact....(clear throat) we had to put it down. We picked up two giant suitcases and two boogie boards at a thrift store in carlsbad. We looked like we were two kids on vacation. By the time we drove the 100 mile trip out of S.D. Elayne was cooked. Her Danish/German shin doesn't do well in full sun.

Those pictures look right out of a Porsche sales catalogue for 1984. Well done guys. Wish I could be there to join you.
