ice: I can light'em up from a stop in a straight line-but who needs to abuse the clutch and CV's like that? It creates horrible wheel hop. I only did it once on purpose, maybe twice by accident. I do try to avoid it.

Clive, we are not talking wheel spin, we are talking smoke. I can kick the back end out at will in a turn, but that doesn't produce smoke. My car has LSD so I too can do it left turn or right. It's a smoker I'm looking for. I want to know just how much HP is required to produce smoke that can be seen at 75 feet.

ah I see .. I figured Ed and the boys should be able to spin em up no problem, when I do it, it is usually by accident and I have not really left enouh time to get around the corner for oncoming taffic. The car makes no smoke and not even any sound , just that squirmy feeling in the back end as you feel the money for rubber emptying out of your wallet.
and that is one superior chip ....

Smoke is a no-can-do. Unless you use Brad Penn Oil "BAM!!"
Wheelspin! No problem! The tires break loose YOU SEE A BIG SMOKEY BURNOUT,
grow chest hair.
intimidate all of the small displacement cars now days.

Smoke is a no-can-do. Not enough weight on the rear tires, and not enough torque. Wheelspin no problem. The tires break loose, then they slow as the tires find grip (wheel hop). It's been a good 20 years or so since I have even seen a good smokey burnout, what with all of the small displacement cars now days.

Cooper tires, burnout problem sloved. You want non-sticky / hard compond tires that don't grip. Wet conditions, but not drenched. Basically, pretend you're in a waterbox at the strip.

We had another guy with a supercharged SHO, Josh Teixeira up from Canuckistan, who was running hoosier slicks up front. Amazing smokeshow. It was 95 deg out that day, not the best for track runs to be sure, and he still managed to get a 115mph trap speed in his Taurus.

i think he means more weight would create more friction and get them to smoke once they let go , like pushing down on a bearing and watching it smoke,

That is what I meant, which is why more torque would produce more heat.
But I had fun going back with my new reply, even if it is less technical in nature....
