Its a "Polo" motor. Built by a guy named Polopolous in Socal. He basically shortens a 911 motor by two cylinders. I don't know a lot more than that. My brother is having one built for one of his 356's right now and he sent me the pictures. if you want more info let me know.

Just found this.

Hmmmmm... I think that I'll throw in with the 917 guys on the motor, the '73 Can Am motor to be specific.

The car is a little tougher, but I think that I'll have to go with the 1965 356 SC. If there was ever perfection in a car (coupe or cabriolet) this was it.

Cars:
Now, I have to say, I'm surprised nobody has mentioned the winningest Porsche of all time

956/962 series

the massive single turbo 962 and the water cooled twin turbo endurance legend 956. Perhaps I am most influenced because of my exposure to them during my formative years.

935 / 917/30/10 / 908 / 550

Engines:
Well those listed above of course and the more tame by no less evolutionary 356/912.

2.0S, 2.7RS, 2.8RSR

Come to think of it did they make anything that wasn't great?!?!?

Yes. It's from the Coen brothers movie "Hudsucker Proxy"

PL played Syd Mussberger. That's where the Mussberger comes from.

You remind me of a sadly remembered situation in about 1967. I had just bought my first home in Santa Ana, an older 4 bedroom with hard wood floors, for $10,500. I was driving a bent window 356 with a Judson blown VW engine at the time (in primer). About a mile for my house a pair of 356 Speedsters came up for sale. The owner had left his wife to go teach at Berkley, and also left her the 2 Speedsters. All three of these throwaways were lovely. She wanted something like 3 or $4000 for the pair. I had the money but just could not force myself to do the buy when looking at it as being 1/3 the price of the house. So 40 years later the sting of regret is still vivid. Dumb and dumber. Hope I dont dream about it tonight.

WOW! I have a Speedster story of my own. In 1971 I knew that I was going to have to buy a house. I qualified for a VA loan, but needed to raise the down payment. My only asset was my '58 Speedster, rust and accident free, complete with Super 90 engine. I sold it (for $3500), and sat on the curb to watch its new owner drive it away.

I can't remember a tear, but there quite possibly was one.

Great stories. Pete, I know this is off topic, but what do you think of the '00 Boxster S? I don't remember whether Boxster's are covered in your book, which I bought before I bought my 911. Unfortunately, I moved some stuff around at my house and can't seem to find the book (maybe I loaned it to someone). Thanks in advance for any insights.

I will use this as a bump with hope that Peter will pick it up. I went onto the boxster side about an engine I had found in Dallas for the Boxster. It needed repair but I thought if I found a car, the spare engine would be good to have. I found out that some parts are not easy to get and that they may be a problem to work on. When I made comment, here, that the 911 had gone up in my book, I got confirmation taht the boxster engine can be a problem. I recently ran across 2 1999 911s for sale with engine problems. When I went to other side about a do it yourself repair, what I heard did not sound good. Both engines may suffer from similar flaws. I really like the Boxster but the S2000 or trubo Miada may be a better choice for me. This of course disqualifies the cars based only upon ease of engine repair. I may have a go at a 1999 with the idea that I can part it out if the engine is not doable.

Porsche I would most like to own, 95-8 GT2 or 91 3.8RSR.

Best Porsche ever. 3.2 Carrera. Almost anyone can owe one. Is cheep to maintain and make go fast relitive to most other P cars. Can be cheeply lightened with a few fiber parts to 2350lbs =/-. For the price of a cat bypass, mod to the stock muffler, and a chip can get near 250hp. Not hard to get near the 73RS experance with a low stressed car that dose not have any bad habits. Best of the best is the 915 model has a weight advantage and cost advantage.

Of cource would love a 916, IROC, 94 C2 TurboS light weight, a new GT3RS, or GT v10 ...

Do Porsche designed vehicles count? If so then the best Porsche designed car were the over 1 million odd little scarab shaped sedans built for over 50 years in several factories all over the world. Hands down the most influential Porsche wasn't a Porsche at all but a VW.

Putting Beta cloth suit on now...
