Default What's This?

Need some help on a component I found today while troubleshooting my starting issue (ref.: Tech Help Requested - Car Not Starting)

Left of the battery toward the front bumper is a black plastic housing with an electrical plug. The back is cone shaped and the front rectangular end is fitted into the bumper housing. Mine is not plugged in - there is a female plug near the negative post of the battery and I sure that where it goes.

I suspect its part of my AC (blower??) but why is it not plugged in? What does it do?

Thanks,
Nick

It's the evaporator fan. It is unfused so if you don't use your a/c I would unplug it to be safe.

Thanks -

But I do use my AC - any reason not to plug it in?? What purpose does it serve in the AC system?

Not a clue, my AC system currently sits in a box in the garage.

I am pretty sure that's the evaporator fan, not 100% sure though. I find it odd that your AC would work with out it, interesting. Actually I find it odd that anyone has a 911 AC that works but that's another story.

It's A/C related, but iisn't that the condenser fan.
I only know 'cause mt evap fan (in the smuggler's box) is dead and expensive).
Stop me if I'm wrong and help me save $$.

if it catches fire when it's plugged in, you'll know why it was unplugged.
look and see if someone retrofitted a fuse for it somewhere, should be 7.5A

Yes, it is the front A/C condenser cooling fan. They have also been known to be a fire problem due to them not being properly fused. A lot of people have done the fuse update on them. I have seen a lot of them not in use, without really any adverse results with the A/C.

I am not really sure just how much that fan would actually help with the A/C, due to the design, and the very limited area where the fan would actually be blowing through the condenser??

If it's unplugged it's a RED flag! If it where my car I'd take the blower out of the car and bench test the hell out of it before I plug it in.

The PO most likely unplugged it for a reason, ie: it made lots of noise, did not work, ... without a bench test you have NO idea what's up with the blower.

It doesn't look like much, but it sure makes a big difference on my SC if the front condesor fan isn't working.

Default Porsche recall for this problem?

Thanks to all for the information on the mystery part. Your responses lead me to ask this:

Has Porsche ever recalled the impacted blowers? What's their position on this being a potential fire hazard?

Thanks,
Nick

They have never had a recall as far as I know, but Porsche sells a fused harness for this application.

Part # 911.612.077.00 and it should be ~ $30.00
