911 Purchase
I have had 911s in the past, the last being a 1982 911sc which I sold in 1987.
I started looking at 1987-1989 911 Carraras. I am only interested in sunroof coupes with dark colored interior and light colored exterior. A perfect car would be white with black interior.
The car will be used daily and for auto x. Any opinions? Advice? I have set a limit of $32,000. for max I would spend.

ANY of those cars would be great Auto-x cars, but the late 964 and 993 would be the best for a daily driver. Personally, I would get something like a G50 Carrera and save the extra money for add ons. The only thing that I don't like about the late Carrera's is that they are pretty heavy and not very torquey. They are FUN above 4000 though. The 964's are a good compromise because it is still possible for a backyard mechanic to work on them and they also have some creature comforts. Just my 2c.

Hey Banker, ever considered a ‘Turbo-Look’ 911 Carrera? With far less money and some serious searching, I found a 1984 Carrera 3.2 M491 optioned coupe. It was a dry, straight, original car in very nice shape. The really cool thing with the M491 option, you get a Factory Turbo ‘Delete’ car! Same muscular factory Turbo body, including the very important revised suspension and corresponding attachment points to support the wider tires and wheels, plus type 917 rotors and calipers, etc. Additionally, a free spinning; torquey 3.2 engine rated @ 207hp is one of the most reliable with no turbo hassles or expenses. The same factory items and modifications when installed correctly today could run as high as $30K and still only be a ‘conversion’. According to some Porsche ‘aficionados’, the M491 option is supposedly worth only an additional $5K over standard "narrow" body 911 prices. An extraordinary value indeed considering time will prove them to be worth far more when the actual scarcity of these cars is fully realized. IMHO, these limited production M491 Carreras will appreciate in value way beyond any standard 911. After all, there were only 1,180 imported into North America between the years of 1984 thru 1989. When you average the numbers, there were less than 4 cars per state available on any given year! The good news for you is the simple fact that most of these cars have been well cared for and a lot of sellers don’t even realize what they have... Now is the time to get a great deal on a limited-production reliable very fun car with clean classic muscular Turbo “Look’s” for a fraction of their future value. It’s only a matter of time before prices really start climbing… At a little over 2,750lbs, they’re a blast to drive... every day! Just my 2 cents... Happy hunting and keep us posted on your progress!

I'd shoot for 993 first, then a G-50 Carrera (low miles or M491 option) or a 1989 930. It's a buyers market right now so you would be suprised what you can get.

I'm guessing you prefer the Carrera body style to the early 90's evolution. If true, here's my $.02.....
The year models you have in mind are going for low to mid 20's in good to excellent condition. Put the rest of your budget into AC upgrades and performance mods. That will keep you cool in the Texas summer and quick on the track (and street, obviously)

Judging by the cost you're willing to spend you're after a very nice example. Kudos to you, I'm with ya' on that one. With that said, you'd be much happier buying a pristine Carrera over a high mileage 993. It'll have less maintenance (potentially) and won't have the wear & tear of a lower mileage vehicle (less nose dings, creased leather, etch). A mint 3.2 is a special 911! And you won't need to spend your max price as pointed out by the other Posts above.

That's why I mentioned a 993 - hmmmmmm light exterior with dark interior in Ft. Worth, Texas (Sister lives in Keller!) AC in a Carrera 3.2 is minimal - I'd be willing to go a little higher mileage vs sweating... But that's me...
