Default Problems installing heater back date on a 84 Carrera

Has anyone successfully installed the heater back date on a 1984 Carrera?
Attempted to install the left side heater back date fan housing (Automotion - Part Number: 915789) and it doesn’t fit.

Worked on this for an hour or so before giving up.
It is about 1/8 inch or so from fitting all the way down, the output is hitting one of the fixed oil lines also plug wires are going to be in the way.
  • Is it the wrong part?
  • Am I missing something?
  • Or do I have move the other components?
Thanks for any help.

I thought with SSIs you have to back-date the oil lines. Are you going this route?

Looked at the product, says "AC cars need modification".

There are several apporaches to backdating on a Carrera...I used a OEM left side hot air duct from a 930...here's a thread. Hope this helps.

Working on getting pictures, have to take it all a part again should have the pictures tomorrow.

Yes, did most of my research before the project on the Pelican forums.

Looked at a 85 911 today at the Autobahn DE but it's a little different, hopefully the pictures will help.
Thanks guys.

If you backdate using SSI's you will also need to backdate oil lines... or it wont work...

Here are a couple of pictures to help show the problem.
I didn't change to SSI's, just trying to do the top side.
Left side and connect it to the heat exchanger pipe, bottom part of the picture.
The problem is with the oil line, see the tee, hard to see in the picture but there is also a small line straight back and down, it's by the bracket for the spark plug wires.

Thanks for any help.

It appears to me (hard to tell from the camera angle) that your hot air duct is slightly different than the 930 part I used. I've heard of folks also using a duct fabricated by Pelican "Widebody", or one modifed by John Walker, but I've never seen the Automation part mentioned before (but that doesn't mean it can't be made to work). Here's the third pic from the thread I referenced above showing mine. I notice that you have a slight gap at the top of the shroud. If you "modify" (i.e. bend, hammer, etc.) the air duct a bit to make it sit flush, will that pull the other end "up" enough to clear the oil line? It's been a few years, but I seem to recall "hammering" on mine a bit to make it fit to my satisfaction, and also filled up the holes (JB Weld) and had it powder coated (along with a bunch of other stuff), so you can't really tell. I'd also bend that plug bracket a bit forward to give you more clearance if necessary. Hope this helps, and good luck!

ps: Before you go any further, is your distributor cap (and plug wires) going to have clearance on the Automation part even if you get the oil line clearance resolved...(the "curve" for clearance doesn't seem to be nearly as pronounced).

Just for clarification, I have the OEM 930 hot air duct, and Widebody's is made from fiberglass (I think), but folks seem to have used his with no issues.

It would fit if it would go down another 1/8 of an inch but it's hitting the oil line on the left. Reviewed a number of pictures, both here and over at Pelican and it looks like the oil line tee on mine is more on the left side of square casting and all the other pictures I looked at the oil line tee is on the right side of that square casting.
First I'm going to try and heat up the outlet and see if I can bend it up, other wise I may take J up on his offer.
Thanks,
Phil

After beating on this thing for almost 2 hours tonight I still cannot get this thing to fit.
Before I spend more $ on the 930 part, if anyone that has one would you be able to measure the space between the base and the end of the outlet, see picture it would be great.

Thanks,
Phil

Sorry you're having so much trouble Phil . When I get home, I'll take a look, but I don't think there's anyway for me to get an accurate measurement with it installed but I'll sure try.

Default I won

Well after beating it into submission, I got it to fit.
Not pretty, I will probably take it back out and repaint it.
But then again I may just by the 930 part if I can find out if it would fit out of the box.
Thanks for all that provided advice.
