I don't remember off hand what the Amp ratings are but on my '86 there is a chart on the inside of my fuse box cover that tells all.

Original fuses are the ceramic with exposed element, replacements are the enclosed glass tube type which can be found at any auto parts store.(just a matter of finding the right length to fit into the holders).

Brian,

The yellow fuses are 5 amp, the white 8 amp, the red 16 amp and the blue 25 amp. I too had a hard time locating the 5 amp fuses. The Porsche dealership did not have the 5 amp fuse in stock when I needed one, and the service technician said they use the 8 amp fuse in place of the 5 amp all the time. In the end, the dealership special ordered a few for me. They were a bit more expensive than at an auto parts store, but how often do you need to replace a fuse? Hope this helps.

The Yellow 5 amp fuses are very hard to find and are expensive. I talked to several shops and they all told me the same thing,"we replace the Yellow 5 amp fuses with the White 8 amp ones".

If memory serves, Buss makes a 5 amp fuse that will work. It'll be glass tube enclosed, but with pointed ends, same length as the ceramic original fuses. A NAPA store should have them. Just tell the parts guy they're for an old VW beetle...or he'll charge extra

The Porsche part number for the 5 amp fuse is 900 173 006 90. I think the dealer charged me $.70 each for them. I don't know how much cheaper you can get them from NAPA, but sometimes it is just easier to order parts through the dealer. I am sure the later type fuse will work, but I liked the color coded fuses, and even though it's a small thing, for an extra $.25 I feel better keeping things original.

Hello, anyone home?.. :
I think it is just plain lunacy for anyone...let alone a dealer fer-goodness-sakes...to simply substitute 8 amp fuses where 5 amp should be. Lawsuit potential , too ??

Brian911: I found the 5 amp fuses you were talking about at my NAPA Store here in San Antonio this weekend. The Part Number is 782-1102 and cost was $0.39/ea plus tax. If you have an NAPA store close by, see if they have them or can order them. I told the guy I was looking for the yellow ceramic ones for a VW and he knew exactly what I was talking about.

I gotta chime in here on this subject and agree wholeheartedly with Wil. You wouldn't believe what I've seen various mechanics and technicians do on these cars and I'm not surprised that some folks would do this.

If a circuit and/or accessory requires 5 amp protection, then for darned sakes, install the correct fuse or suffer the (expensive) consequences.

FWIW, the glass NAPA fuses are slightly shorter than the German ceramic ones, and you might need to bend the holding tangs a little for a secure fit.

Thanks Steve:
I couldn't believe what I was hearing/seeing printed. An 8A fuse isn't simply an additional 3 amps ...it's a 60% increase in load carrying capacity. Doesn't sound so small anymore does it?

I might be a little edgy about this because a previous owner's folly in this area cost me over $3000 in an electrical fire some years back....no fun!
