US spec SC question
 

Hi all,

My newly acquired beautiful 1980 911 SC was supplied new in Texas, but has the speedo and mileometer in KM. Were the clocks on US spec cars supplied reading in KM or have these been changed when it was exported?

The title assignment document dated 1995 states 48500 km so I think they are original.

It could be that it was a grey market car, and it could be that it got a kilometer speedo put in by a previous owner who thought that would look more "Euro." If you post the VIN from the A pillar or the front under-the-hood plate (but not the number carved into the chassis by the smuggler's box), it'll be apparent whether it was a U.S.-delivery model or ROW (rest of world). If you're concerned about people knowing your VIN, substitute XXX for the last three digits.

Its definitely a US spec car, the VIN starts WPOAA098BS. Were any supplied with KM clocks or would they all have been MPH?

That's not the VIN, unless it's a number that was used as part of the federalization process later in the car's life.

1980 was the last year Porsche used a 10-digit VIN scheme. The number should be something like '91A014XXXX.'

Model: 91=911, 93=Turbo
Year: A=1980
Plant: 0=plant manufactured
Spacer: 1=(final 1 in "911")
Engine: 4=911SC for the US, 3=911SC for ROW, 7=930 (Turbo)
The final four digits are the individual car's serial number.

Check for plates in the driver's door jam, driver's A pillar, and leading edge of the trunk under the hood.

In 1981, Porsche moved to the 17-digit scheme that would start with WPO.

Sorry just looked at the title and its a 1981 model year. It has been incorrectly registered in the UK as a 1980 model.

So this car is in the UK now? Could it have been in other parts of Europe first, that would explain the KM guages in the dash?
