Rislone to clean out a 3.0?
I am looking to buy a 911 SC Targa sometime next year, and am doing all the research I can on what maintenence will be needed, upgrades, etc. Considering the fact that this car will be around 20 years old and oil cooled, has anyone run a 3.0 engine using Rislone to clean it out? Are there any dangers in doing this? I put a 50% Rislone mix in a 350 Chev and ran it for 5 mins once, then changed the oil twice to flush- worked great! Any ideas/suggestions?
Cheers,
Paul.

I don't think Rislone would be considered an additive actually. It is more of an engine flush intended to remove the built up sludge. I have no idea as to the actual impact on a 911 engine but I think you would be concerned that some "sludge" would be keeping some bearings and seals working. My gut would tell me to leave well enough alone unless you were getting ready to tear down the engine anyway.

You'd be better off buying a car that has been properly maintained, in which case the engine won't need "cleaned out".
I recently did the first oil change since I bought my '88 Carrera. The oil in the car was non-synthetic and had about 6K miles on it. Both magnetic drain plugs were completely free of any material, the oil color was relatively light and and I was still able to see through it - no evidence of any metal particles floating around. It was unbelievably clean. The car has 66K miles on it and is 14 years old.

Am i mistaken or is the very fact that this engine is oil cooled which would make addditives an especially bad idea?
Just asking...

Thanks for the advice- but I must stress that Rislone is NOT an additive- you empty the engine of oil, put in a rislone/oil mix, run it for 5 mins to 'clear out the gunk' then drain all the rislone/oil out, and fill the (hopefully) cleaner engine with regular oil. I understand some folks have cooling problems, and thought cleaning out the system might help this.

Don't do if unless you want oil leaks. I've read where that stuff works so good that it eats away at the seals. Your engine may get cleaned but so will your seals to the point where they will leak.

Hi:
I would strongly advise you not to put Rislone in any 911 engine.
The stuff that this product loosens up will wind up in your cam tower spray bars (as well as other places) and you can ruin your cams & rockers at the very least.

Thanks for all the advice guys- I'll not use rislone in the engine. Steve- thanks for the advice. You're my nearest shop (I'm in La Grande, OR.) I'll give you a shout when I get the car- I presume you can do a chain tensioner upgrade and put new head studs in?
Thanks again,
Paul.
